The Effect Of 72 Consecutive Hours In The Coronary Care Unit On The Night Sleep Of 10 Patients Age 65 And Older, Eugenia J. Creason Dec 1977

The Effect Of 72 Consecutive Hours In The Coronary Care Unit On The Night Sleep Of 10 Patients Age 65 And Older, Eugenia J. Creason

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The prevalence of heart disease in the population over age 65 has contributed to the increasing number of aged patients hospitalized in critical care units (Gsell, 1977). Changes which occur in the process of aging and in cardiac disease should be considered when providing nursing care to these patients. A disturbance in the sleep wakefulness cycle resulting in a decrease of restorative sleep is a major change occurring at age 65 and after (Feinberg, 1967). The cardiac patient finds that it takes longer to go to sleep, and then awakens often during the night (Karacan et al., 1969).

With the speed doctors use to perform the procedure, many women may wish to take advantage of the medically safer method of abortion under local anesthesia. However, some women are unable to withstand the psychological and physical stress associated with a therapeutic abortion while awake. It would be …

A Scanning Electron Microscope Study Of Fractured Orthodontic Wires, Dale G. Fessenden May 1977

A Scanning Electron Microscope Study Of Fractured Orthodontic Wires, Dale G. Fessenden

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In the practice of orthodontics much time is spent each week replacing broken appliances. However, very little research has been done to study the cause of orthodontic wire failure. A few articles have reported the incidence of removable appliance failures but only one article has reported research concerning the failure of fixed appliance wires.

There has been much speculation concerning the contributing factors for premature wire failure. The concensus is that fatigue is a major factor in their fracture. There are three basic types of wire failure: ductile, fatigue, which ends in ductile rupture, and brittle failure. Ductile failure is …
