The Recovery Care Model is the recommended evidence-based model for delivering holistic, patient-centered care for mental health clients. The model is a more therapeutic approach than the traditional medical model and upholds the ideas that psychiatric clients are more than just their illness, should be respected as unique individuals, and provided with hope and empowerment in their care while being given the opportunity for informed and autonomous decision-making. Although research has shown support for the Recovery Care Model, its implementation has not been fully accomplished in all psychiatric facilities. The following is a thesis containing two separate parts: the background paper and a website. While both parts have been created with the ability to stand alone, they work best in conjunction with one another. The overall project provides a close study of Staunton, Virginia’s Western State Hospital’s Superintendent, Dr. Joseph DeJarnette, who practiced there from 1906-1943, and his involvement with eugenic sterilization. Dr. DeJarnette practiced during the Progressive Era, which influenced him to be a man desiring reform and progress, through science.
