The Relationship Between Jealousy And Self-Esteem In Collegiate Athletes, Paula M. Parker Jan 2001

The Relationship Between Jealousy And Self-Esteem In Collegiate Athletes, Paula M. Parker

Legacy ETDs

Previous research has found contradictory results when examining the possible relationship between jealousy and self-esteem (Guerrero & Afifi, 1998, Mathes & Severa, 1981; Mikulincer, Bizman, & Aizenberg, 1989, Peretti & Pudowski, 1997; Stewart & Beatty, 1985; White, 1981). Jealousy has been most often researched in romantic relationships (Peretti & Pudowski, 1997; Salovey & Rodin, 1986) and social comparison situations (Bers & Rodin, 1984, Mikulincer, Bizman, & .Aizenberg, 1989). Few studies have examined jealousy in an athletic setting. Sport jealousy has received little attention because until recently, there was no reliable instrument to measure jealousy in sport. Pease (1987) investigated the …

Legacy ETDs

The study examined the foot care knowledge and foot care habits of a random sample (n = 540) of residents of Chatham County, Georgia. Data were collected using a mail survey which had a response rate of 26.29% (142 responses). Data analysis indicated that foot pain and discomfort are a significant problem for more than half of the respondents (57.87%). The emphasis of fashion over fit of both shoe-manufacturers, and society in general, appears to contribute significantly to the problem. Lack of education in preventive measures for foot health is also a significant contributing factor. Replication of the study is …

Using a pretest posttest Cybex II strength test and applying a t-test for independent samples, it was found that after four weeks there was no significant difference between Group A (N=10) who exercised using Delorme's technique and Group B (N=10) who used the DAPRE technique It was concluded that possibly because of the low sample number, the short length of the exercise intervention, and using normal healthy subjects instead of …

Home Care Nurses And Home Care Patients: Differences In Perceptions Of Nurse Caring Behaviors, Sara K. Welsh Jan 1993

Home Care Nurses And Home Care Patients: Differences In Perceptions Of Nurse Caring Behaviors, Sara K. Welsh

Legacy ETDs

Caring has been identified as the essence of nursing. Leininger (1988b, p. 3) even stated that "caring is nursing and nursing is caring." Caring has been studied from many different perspectives. Throughout the history of nursing the caring aspect has grown from a primarily caregiver role, to having a caring intersubjective relationship with the patient. Various studies have been conducted to try and identify which nursing behaviors make patients feel cared for. The purpose of this exploratory study was twofold: (a) to determine what were the most important nurse caring behaviors as perceived by both home care nurses and patients; …

Aerat: Evaluating The Effectiveness Of The Accidental Extubation Risk Assessment Tool In Identifying Level Of Risk For Accidental Extubation, Annette Beebe Hayman

Legacy ETDs

Utilization of the endotracheal tube as a mechanism for maintaining control of airway patency and tissue oxygenation has been a standard of practice in modern critical care medicine. Complications can result from the accidental removal of the endotracheal tube from its proper position. This could lead to many severe ill effects including death. As a result, the prevention of accidental extubation becomes a priority for this patient population. The purpose of the study was to determine the effectiveness of the Accidental Extubation Risk Assessment Tool (AERAT) in identifying the level of risk of the ventilated patient for accidental extubation. The …

Dental Patients' Knowledge, Beliefs, And Perceptions About Dentistry And Aids, Sara S. Plaspohl Jan 1992

Dental Patients' Knowledge, Beliefs, And Perceptions About Dentistry And Aids, Sara S. Plaspohl

Legacy ETDs

The majority of Americans view AIDS as the most important health problem faced today. Despite efforts to educate the public, the literature suggests that misperceptions exist concerning HIV transmission. The documented case of a Florida dentist who transmitted the HIV virus to five dental patients focused the public's attention on its perceived vulnerability to contracting HIV during a dental visit. The purpose' of this descriptive study was to identify the dental patient's perceived risk of acquiring the AIDS virus during a dental visit and to then determine whether the perceived risk was related to the patient's level of oral hygiene. …

A Suffering Odyssey: A Phenomenological-Interpretive Analysis, William M. Scott Jan 1992

A Suffering Odyssey: A Phenomenological-Interpretive Analysis, William M. Scott

Legacy ETDs

The purpose of this study is to explicate how suffering is experienced and interpreted by sufferers. Nursing and medical literature, until quite recently, has been visibly bereft on the topic of human suffering. The subject is made even more confusing because of a lack of a standardized definition: By its very essence, suffering is a relative experience, highly personalized and intimately interpreted. In the past, it has been related to mental anguish, injury, loss, stress, and pain.

Five individuals from contextually different regions of the world were asked to share their suffering stories. Two lived in the southern coastal area …

The Effect Of Dosage Regimen On Medication Compliance, Ernest William Keich Jan 1992

The Effect Of Dosage Regimen On Medication Compliance, Ernest William Keich

Legacy ETDs

According to recent data, between 25% and 50% of patients are noncompliant in their therapy regimen in some manner. The fourth report of the Joint National Committee on the Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure (Neal, 1989) states that noncompliance is the major problem in hypertension control.

It was hypothesized there would be a difference in the compliance of hypertensive patients whose medication regimen consisted of single daily dosing as opposed to those patients whose regimen consisted of two or more times a day dosing.

Potential subjects for the study were hypertensive patients selected from a rural, southeastern …

Subjects were then randomly assigned to either Group I: Controllable Event or Group II: Uncontrollable Event. Pre- and post-experimental one-minute time estimates and pre- and post-experimental one-minute key tapping sessions were recorded for all subjects. During the experimental condition, subjects in Group I: Controllable Event estimated a …

The Relationship Of Job Satisfaction And The Retention Of Head Nurses, Renee Overstreet Teeple Jan 1991

The Relationship Of Job Satisfaction And The Retention Of Head Nurses, Renee Overstreet Teeple

Legacy ETDs

Nursing turnover is a chronic problem for nursing and hospital administration. Nursing turnover consumes a major portion of nonessential nursing costs. The effects of nursing turnover is compounded when it involves the head nurse. Nursing administration must identify the causes of this turnover and develop strategies to prevent it.

The purpose of this study was to determine if a relationship exists between job satisfaction and the intent to remain in a position. Head nurses from fifty (50) randomly selected acute care medical surgical facilities in Georgia were surveyed. one hundred and eight (108) head nurses from thirty (30) hospitals responded. …

Individual Differences In Lateralization Of Cognitive Processes: Type I And Type Ii Processors, Walter Berry Branch Jan 1985

Individual Differences In Lateralization Of Cognitive Processes: Type I And Type Ii Processors, Walter Berry Branch

Legacy ETDs

Recent research indicates that the two hemispheres of the human brain serve different functions when processing visual information. Specifically the left hemisphere, for most individuals, is specialized for an analytic or sequential type of processing and the right hemisphere is specialized for a holistic or gestalt type of processing. However this dichotomy is not always found, and it is hypothesized that individual subject differences may partially account for the somewhat inconsistent results in the research literature. The present study attempts to examine the effect of one individual difference dimension upon process lateralization . Subjects were classified into two types, Type …

Personality Differences Between Attractive And Unattractive High School Females, Andrea Rene Re Jan 1981

Personality Differences Between Attractive And Unattractive High School Females, Andrea Rene Re

Legacy ETDs

High school females (N = 131) were photographed and given the Texas Social Behavioral Inventory (TSBI), Attitudes Toward Women Scale (ATWS), Rotter Internal-External (I-E) Scale, Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale (M-C), and Bern Sex-Role Inventory (BSRI). The photographs were rated by four female graduate students in psychology for physical attractiveness and two groups of 36 each were identified: an attractive group and an unattractive group. These two groups were then compared for differences on the five personality tests. The results indicated that attractive females are higher in self-esteem as measured by the TSBI, (t = 2.543, p< .05) and less feminine sex-typed as measured by the BSRI, (t=2.10, p< .05). No other significant differences were found. Findings are discussed in terms of research in the area of physical attractiveness stereotyping as it relates to personality development.

Effects Of Operant Conditioning Of Cooperative Play On Non-Reinforced Behaviors In Severely And Profoundly Retarded Adults, Martha Wade Aenchbacher Jan 1977

Effects Of Operant Conditioning Of Cooperative Play On Non-Reinforced Behaviors In Severely And Profoundly Retarded Adults, Martha Wade Aenchbacher

Legacy ETDs

A group of seven severely and profoundly retarded adults from a sheltered workshop program were trained in cooperative play (basketball skills and hand clapping) using social and edible reinforcement and fading procedures. The generalization effects of the training on non-reinforced (undesirable) behaviors in an extratraining setting was investigated. A reversal technique in which the reinforcement was temporarily withdrawn demonstrated the reliable functioning of the training procedures. Independent observers recorded target behaviors during five phases: Baseline; Training; Generalization Testing; Extinction; Generalization Testing. The rate of undesirable behaviors decreased significantly in the extra-training setting (activity room) following the training phase. The findings …
