Implementing Rapid Response And Medical Emergency Simulation Training For Medical-Surgical Nurses, Brandon Burnett Jan 2022

Implementing Rapid Response And Medical Emergency Simulation Training For Medical-Surgical Nurses, Brandon Burnett

Master of Science in Nursing Theses and Projects

This project is based on the problem of nursing competence and confidence within medical emergency and rapid response scenarios. This problem affects all patients, but specifically the medical-surgical patient population of which rapid assessment and intervention can lead to a change in patient mortality. The goal of the project is to use simulation, a common tool in undergraduate nursing education, to improve nursing competence and confidence after participation. The nurses will be cycled through three simulated scenarios, followed by a debriefing, and then moved to the next simulation. The nurses’ performance will be evaluated using evaluator checklists for each of …

Smoking Cessation: A Nurse-Led Approach To Address Gaps In Patient Care, Katie L. Durham Jan 2022

Smoking Cessation: A Nurse-Led Approach To Address Gaps In Patient Care, Katie L. Durham

Master of Science in Nursing Theses and Projects

Currently, the rate of smoking in the US is 13.7%. While this value represents the lowest rate of smoking in documented US history, cigarette smoking remains the leading cause of preventable death, disease, and morbidity. Healthy People 2030 has set a goal to reduce the rate of smoking to 5%. Though many patients report wanting to quit smoking, nearly half report they did not receive advice from a healthcare professional to do so. Many recommended smoking cessation tools and resources remain underutilized by both clinicians and patients. To help mitigate this issue, this project sought to develop a nurse-led smoking …

Faculty Perception Of Student Nurse Compassion Post-Simulation Experiences, Lisa Alley Jan 2021

Faculty Perception Of Student Nurse Compassion Post-Simulation Experiences, Lisa Alley

Master of Science in Nursing Theses and Projects

Compassion is a common, foundational component in nursing and remains a challenge for faculty to continue to employ into nursing students. As simulation technology continues to gain momentum, faculty have expressed the benefits and downfalls as related to simulation and nursing education throughout the literature. A qualitative study was performed at a community college school of nursing to assess faculty perceptions of nursing students compassion post-simulation experiences. A survey was administered to faculty to obtain their perceptions.

Incivility In Nursing, Amanda Woodie Barnes Jan 2021

Incivility In Nursing, Amanda Woodie Barnes

Master of Science in Nursing Theses and Projects

Incivility and bullying in the workplace are serious problems in the nursing profession. Nurses who experience uncivil behaviors have been shown to have negative consequences to their health and well-being. Negative interactions between nurses can compromise patient care and patient safety which can result in undesirable patient outcomes. Healthcare organizations are negatively affected financially by these inappropriate behaviors which can be detrimental to the organization. The purpose of this project was to reduce or mitigate incivility in the workplace by increasing knowledge in clinical staffing relating to the issue, increase self-confidence and resilience, and improve communication so staff will be …

Correlational Impact Of Workload, Teamwork And Retention Rate For Clinical Nursing Units, Phillip J. Nutter Jan 2020

Correlational Impact Of Workload, Teamwork And Retention Rate For Clinical Nursing Units, Phillip J. Nutter

Master of Science in Nursing Theses and Projects

Healthcare organizations face an impending shortage of over one million nurses. Staff turnover adds costs to healthcare and decreases the morale of the unit. Teamwork has been shown to be related to engagement as engagement has been shown to be related to retention. Understanding how teamwork mitigates increasing workload at the unit level is critical to reducing turnover at the nursing unit level. This research explored relationships between teamwork and productivity and teamwork and retention rates for nurses. The Neuman Systems Model was used as the framework to guide this retrospective correlational analysis with teamwork as a flexible line of …

Enhancing Teamwork In Nursing Students, Heather Rawson Jan 2020

Enhancing Teamwork In Nursing Students, Heather Rawson

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Abstract

The purpose of this project was to equip senior practical nursing students (n = 11) with the skills needed to increase their feelings of preparedness to join an intradisciplinary team in the workplace after graduation. This project utilized a pre-test/post-test design using TeamSTEPPS® Teamwork Attitudes Questionnaire (T-TAQ) to determine if participation in TeamSTEPPS® training and a simulation exercise enhanced perception of teamwork in senior practical nursing students. A paired t-test was performed to analyze the data collected from the questionnaires acquired before and after the TeamSTEPPS® training. The results showed a t-value of 8.49, greater than …

Self-Care In Bsn Students: Developing A Self-Care Plan, Jamie Davis Brandon May 2018

Self-Care In Bsn Students: Developing A Self-Care Plan, Jamie Davis Brandon

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

Stress is an issue of concern in nursing practice and nursing education. Stress leads to burn out and compassion fatigue in the nurse and student nurse. To combat stress, professional organizations advocate for self-care practices. Research indicates self-care practice can reduce stress levels and increase health and wellness. An evidenced-based DNP project was conducted over a seven-week time frame during a mental health nursing course to educate senior BSN students on different dimensions of self-care to reduce stress levels and increase use of self-care practices.

Improving Nurse-Patient Communication Using The Teach-Back Method, Sheila Revis Smallwood May 2018

Improving Nurse-Patient Communication Using The Teach-Back Method, Sheila Revis Smallwood

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

Effective nursing communication considers health literacy, the person’s ability to understand and make health decisions based on the information given. Health professionals often overestimate the health literacy of patients, thereby affecting patient outcomes. In a hospital environment, patients rate the ability of the nurse to explain things in a way patients understand by completing the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) after discharge. The HCAHPS results are converted to a score which is used in a formula to determine hospital reimbursement; the lower the score, the lower the reimbursement. The purpose of this project was to improve …

Assessing For Barriers To Shared Governance To Increase Employee Engagement, Cheryl Allison Motte Jan 2017

Assessing For Barriers To Shared Governance To Increase Employee Engagement, Cheryl Allison Motte

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

Empirical evidence supports the numerous benefits to an organization with engaged employees as well as benefits to those engaged employees. Never-the-less, over half of American workers are not engaged in their work. In healthcare, nurses score the lowest of all professional healthcare disciplines with engagement. Participation in shared governance has been shown to increase work engagement. The purpose of this MSN descriptive research is to assess for barriers to participation in shared governance and increase work engagement on a geriatric behavioral health unit. The study began with an online shared governance needs assessment questionnaire followed by the Utrecht Work Engagement …
