Reversible Pulmonary Hypertension Secondary To Bronchopneumonia In A Kitten, Jidapa Tosuwan, Sirilak Disatian Surachetpong

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

A five-month-old Siamese kitten was presented with acute respiratory distress. The kitten had respiratory acidosis. The result of the feline N-terminal prohormone of brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) test kit was abnormal. Thoracic radiography revealed patchy lung infiltration and cardiomegaly. Severe right heart enlargement and an intermediate probability of pulmonary hypertension were suggested from echocardiography. Pulmonary hypertension secondary to severe pneumonia was suspected. The kitten was treated with oxygen supplementation, antibiotics and pimobendan. The clinical signs, radiography and echocardiography returned to normal after 30 days of treatment.

Survival Time And Factors Influencing Survival Time In Cats With Arterial Thromboembolism In Thailand, Sirilak Disatian Surachetpong, Selapoom Pairor, Thanika Atiptamvaree, Tanawan Mangklabruks

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

This study aimed to report the survival time and to determine factors influencing survival time in cats with arterial thromboembolism (ATE) in Thailand. The medical records of 89 ATE cats presenting from January 2016 to December 2018 at four referral centers in Thailand were reviewed. The median survival time of ATE cats was 31 days (interquartile range 3-59 days). Cats with an age of at least 5 years (7 days; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0-25.961) had a shorter survival time than those with an age <5 years old (136 days; 95% CI 0-643.216) (p=0.021). Persian cats (450 days; 95% CI 0-37.552) had a longer survival time than other breed cats (15 days; 95% CI 0.799-7.201) (p=0.044). The multivariable Cox-regression analysis showed that a higher concentration of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) (p=0.002; Hazard ratios (HR)=1.002), circulating glucose (p=0.031; HR=1.005), and creatinine (p=0.011; HR=1.207) were associated with an increased risk of death. In conclusion, the survival time of cats with ATE in Thailand is reported. Age and breed influence the survival time of cats with ATE. The concentration of ALT, circulating glucose and creatinine is associated with an increased risk of death.

Role Of Matrix Metalloproteinases In Animals, Sariya Asawakarn, Tanong Asawakarn Jul 2012

Role Of Matrix Metalloproteinases In Animals, Sariya Asawakarn, Tanong Asawakarn

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Matrix metalloproteinases are a family of calcium-dependent and zinc-dependent endopeptidases, which excrete from many cell types. These enzymes can hydrolyze extracellular matrix proteins. The most important inhibitor of MMPs is tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs). The imbalance between MMPs and TIMPs causes pathological condition in human and animals. This review focuses on structural, role and several reports of MMPs in horse, dog, cat, fish and avian. Over production of MMPs is associated with tissue destruction and erosion of cartilage in equine osteoarthritis, especially MMP-2 and MMP-9. In canine and feline, many evidences reported about MMPs and cancer such as MMP-2 …

Time Of The First Embryonic Cleavage Indicates Cat Blastocyst Quality, Nuttha Klincumhom, Ampika Thongphakdee, Mongkol Techakumphu, Kaywalee Chatdarong

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Time of the first cleavage has been used as an indicator to determine developmental rate and quality of embryos in many species. The aim of this study was to examine effect of time of the first cleavage on cat embryo development and blastocyst quality. After in vitro fertilization, embryos were observed twice at 27 and 42 hours. Embryos cleaved at 27 hours post-fertilization (pf) were classified as early cleaved embryos and were separated from the remainder which were determined as delayed cleaved embryos (cleaved between 27 and 42 hours). These two groups were separately cultured in the same condition for …

The Molecular Identification Of Mycoplasma Haemofelis And Mycoplasma Haemominutum In Cats Suffering From Haemoplasmosis In Thailand, Sudchit Chungpivat, Meena Sarikaputi, Supparin Jirasukprasert, Siriluk Jenchangkol, Nareerat Viseshakul Mar 2007

The Molecular Identification Of Mycoplasma Haemofelis And Mycoplasma Haemominutum In Cats Suffering From Haemoplasmosis In Thailand, Sudchit Chungpivat, Meena Sarikaputi, Supparin Jirasukprasert, Siriluk Jenchangkol, Nareerat Viseshakul

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Haemotrophic Mycoplasma is the obligatory bacteria formerly classified to the genus Haemobartonella. This blood mycoplasma is responsible for the cause of a cat disease, haemoplasmosis or feline infectious anemia (FIA). The housed cats evidenced by cachexia, high fever and a certain degree of anemic condition have been reported with FIA worldwide. However, this disease is only a presumptive case in Thailand where the disease is presumably endemic. We examined two cats suffering from FIA tested with the standard microscopic examination. With the destruction of erythrocytes, one cat had only a mild clinical condition while the other was severe. The parasitized …

The Expression Of C-Erbb2 Oncogene Protein As A Prognostic Factor In Feline Mammary Tumors, Mataya Taweechart, On-Uma Sirayayon, Grisnarong Wongbandue, Supradit Wangnaitham, Achariya Sailasuta, Sudson Sirividhayapong, Anudep Rungsipipat

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The study looked at the relationship between the expression of c-erbB2 oncogene protein, histological types, PCNA and AgNORs indices, in feline mammary tumors. Sixty, surgically resected, mammary tumors from cats were collected and histological processed. The expression of c-erbB2 oncogene protein was detected by immunohistochemistry and was seen in benign hyperplasia, adenosis and malignant groups. The c-erbB2 oncogene protein expression in malignant, feline mammary tumors was 41.67% (25/60) which could be divided into simple tubular ACC, 25% (6/24), simple papillary ACC, 78.6% (11/14), solid carcinoma, 26.7% (4/15) and cribiform carcinoma, 57.14% (4/7). There were statistically significantly differences (p<0.05) in the expression of c-erbB2 oncogene protein between simple tubular ACC, compared with simple papillary ACC and solid carcinomas. The expression of c-erbB2 oncogene protein in specimens, classified by histological malignancy grades revealed, grade I, 42.11% and grade II, 41.46% but there was no statistically significant difference between them. An evaluation of a proliferative marker shown by a mean (±SD) of PCNA, was 34.63±23.87 and the mean (±SD) of AgNORs was 1.23±0.18. There was no significant difference between the PCNA and AgNORs index of both the histological types and the histological malignancy grades. However, a statistical difference of mean PCNA and AgNORs indices was noted in both c-erbB2 positive and c-erbB2 negative groups. The mean PCNA indices and AgNORs indices in c-erbB2 positive samples were 26.52±18.68 and 1.12±0.27 respectively, while the c-erbB2 negative ones were 39.43±26.24 and 1.28±0.19 respectively. In conclusion, c-erbB2 oncogene protein expression is considered to be an effective prognostic factor for adenocarcinoma subtypes of feline mammary tumors as it is in human and canine cases. However, integration of all the parameters (c-erbB2 oncogene protein, PCNA index, AgNORs index, histological types and clinical data) may achieve a more precise prognosis in feline, mammary tumor cases.
