The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The study was performed to evaluate the safety and toxicity of bronopol in striped catfish Pangasianodon hypophthalmus. Bronopol product is licensed in Thailand and Vietnam for control of aquatic fungi and ciliated protozoa in scaleless fish at the daily dosage of 10 mg/l, 2-hour static immersion, for 5 consecutive days. Safe concentrations were evaluated in fish exposed to bronopol at the therapeutic dosage (10 mg/l, 2 hours, 5 consecutive days) and 2 and 3 times overdose (20 and 30 mg/l, 2 hours, 5 consecutive days). Fish treated with 10-30 mg/l bronopol for 2 hours daily for 5 consecutive days appeared …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Twenty samples of Thai clay from fourteen provinces and seven commercial toxin binders were investigated for their adsorption capacity of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) in vitro. Each sample of 5 mg/l AFB1 solution was shaken at 250C for 24 hours and supernatants of centrifuged samples were analyzed for concentrations of AFB1 using a UV spectrophotometer. Adsorption capacity was calculated and applied to isothermic equations. The results indicated that Thai clays was capable of sequestering AFB1 from aqueous solution differently and Thai clay from Lopburi and Lamphun provinces had the highest adsorption capacity, similar to commercial binders. S-shaped isothermic curves were observed …

Analysis Of Mirna-29a Expression In Porcine Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells Using Quantitative Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction, Sunaree Nantakhruea, Porntippa Lekcharoensuk, Win Surachetpong

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non coding RNA that regulate gene expression as post transcriptional regulators in mammalian tissues. One of the miRNAs that participates in mammalian immune response is miR-29a. Despite the limited information of miR-29a in porcine cells, it is interesting to determine whether miR-29a involves in immune regulation in pig. In this study, we developed a quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction using SYBR detection system to examine the expression of primary miR-29a (pri-miR-29a) in porcine peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in the presence of mitogen. PBMCs were stimulated with concanavalin A (Con A) at a concentration of …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Bacterial isolates from different cases of respiratory infections in small and large ruminants were evaluated using bacterial culture and semi-nested PCR and identification was confirmed by DNA sequencing. Universal primers targeting the bacterial 16S rRNA for bacteria were used. Other sets of primers that were specific for Gram-positive bacteria and combinations of primers specific for Gram-negative organisms were used in the second PCR. The amplified PCR products were subjected to DNA sequence analysis. The DNA sequences of the isolated bacteria were aligned with the DNA sequences of bacteria in the GenBank through BLAST. Results confirmed isolation of three Gram-positive and …

Molecular Characterization Of Wenyonella Philiplevinei From Ducks In Hunan Province, China, Hui Lan Wu, Peng Hui Hu, Jin Zhang

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Wenyonella philiplevinei is one of the important pathogens of duck coccidiasis. In the present study, a portion of the 18S rDNA was amplified from W. philiplevinei by Polymerase chain reaction (PCR), cloned and then sequenced. The sequences of 18S rDNA of all samples were 422 bp in size. A + T content of the 18S rDNA sequences was 58-59%. Sequence comparison revealed that the similarity in 18S rDNA sequences between Hunan isolates and W. philiplevinei available (Guangdong isolate) was more than 98%. Intra-specific sequence variations within each of the Hunan isolates were 0-1.7%. However, the inter-specific sequence differences between W. …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Testicular atrophy is a major cause of culling in boars. Pathogenesis of this change is poorly understood. Therefore, we aimed to investigate pathological changes of the genital tracts of culled boars with testicular atrophy. Twenty-eight genital organs of culled boars collected from slaughter houses in Thailand were pathologically examined. According to testicular weight, the organs were allocated into 4 groups: severe atrophy (n = 12), moderate atrophy (n = 4), mild atrophy (n = 4), and normal control (n = 8). In the severe atrophic group, the mean weight of atrophic testes (175.1 ± 51 g) was lower than those …

Bone Cell Function: A Review, Hoai Nam Nguyen, Naruepon Kampa Sep 2013

Bone Cell Function: A Review, Hoai Nam Nguyen, Naruepon Kampa

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Bone is dynamic tissue which is continuously formed and absorbed by its own cells in response to stimuli such as hormones, mechanical loading and growth factors. Understanding the function of bone cells is important, not only in orthopedic field but also in research study involving bone. Bone cells work in harmony to maintain a balance between bone formation and resorption, ultimately to control bone structure and function. Osteoblasts are cells, which contribute to deposition of organic components of bone extracellular matrix. They control recruitment, differentiation and maturation of osteoclasts that participate in resorption activity. In addition, osteoclasts associated with bone …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

This study aimed to perform an in vitro testing of the efficacy of various kinds of disinfectant on infectious bronchitis virus (IBV). Four kinds of disinfectants including Virusnip, Omnicide, CID2000 and Virkon S were used for the virus inactivation test. After challenge with each strain of IBV for each contact time (30 seconds, 1, 5 and 30 minutes), we recorded number of dead embryo/6 inoculated eggs after incubation. Results showed that there was no significant difference among the contact times except 1:800 Virusnip tested for Tha07 (p < 0.05). For Tha03, there was a significant difference among the disinfectants at 30 seconds and 1 minute of contact times (p < 0.05). For Tha08, there was a significant difference among the disinfectants at 1 minute of contact time (p < 0.05). For Tha09, there was a significant difference among the disinfectants at 5 and 30 minutes of contact times (p < 0.05). For Tha10, there was a significant difference among the disinfectants at 5 minutes of contact time (p < 0.05). Virusnip revealed the ability to inactivate the activity of 9 IBV strains in all exposure times, especially at dilutions of 1 : 100 and 1 : 200.

Canine monocytic ehrlichiosis (CME) is an important multisystemic disease in dogs which is caused by Ehrlichia canis (E. canis). Systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and severe anemia from E. canis might be the potential causes of myocardial damage. Cardiac troponin T (cTnT) is considered to be a sensitive and specific biomarker for myocardial damage in many mammalian species. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effect of CME on serum cTnT levels in dogs and to determine the relationship between serum cTnT and values obtained from hematology. Fifty-two client-owned dogs were recruited into this study and clinical data …
