College students are often experience many stressors. This study was designed to look at perceived-stress and health habits with relation to academic department of undergraduate students at Cedarville University. The results of this study have implications for the Physical Activity and the Christian Life (PACL) class, offered on the Cedarville campus, in assessing its current curriculum and making potential future adjustments to the course. The objective of this study was to answer the question: “Do perceived stress levels within different academic departments affect health habits in Cedarville University undergraduate students?”
The study was conducted with a campus-wide, 27 question survey …

Higher levels of circulating estrogens and estrogen metabolites (EMs) have been associated with higher breast cancer risk. In breast tissues, reduced levels of terminal duct lobular unit (TDLU) involution, as reflected by higher numbers of TDLUs and acini per TDLU, have also been linked to elevated breast cancer risk. However, it is unknown whether reduced TDLU involution mediates the risk associated with circulating EMs. In a cross-sectional analysis of 94 premenopausal and 92 postmenopausal women referred for clinical breast biopsy at an academic facility in Vermont, we examined the associations of 15 EMs, quantified using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, with …

Cedarville University’s human biology students are excelling nationally. Last year, Cindy Wingert, assistant professor of biology, administered the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society’s (HAPS) exam for her Human Structure and Function class. Wingert’s class achieved such a high average score that they ranked at the 99 percentile nationally.
The HAPS comprehensive exam was established in June of 1993 as a standardized assessment form for two semester undergraduate anatomy and physiology courses. The validated exam is administered online in a secure platform. The exam allowed Wingert to compare the performance of her class with the rest of the nation. Class results …

Immune modulation is a hallmark of patent filarial infection, including suppression of antigen-presenting cell function and downmodulation of filarial antigen-specific T cell responses. The mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway has been implicated in immune regulation, not only by suppressing T cell responses but also by regulating autophagy (through mTOR sensing amino acid availability). Global proteomic analysis (liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry) of microfilaria (mf)-exposed monocyte-derived dendritic cells (DC) indicated that multiple components of the mTOR signaling pathway, including mTOR, eIF4A, and eIF4E, are downregulated by mf, suggesting that mf target this pathway for immune modulation in DC. Utilizing Western …

OBJECTIVE: To determine tissue concentrations of E2, estrone, P, and estrogens metabolites (EMs) 2-methoxyestradiol, 2-methoxyestrone, 4-hydroxyestrone, and 16-ketoestradiol in corpus luteum (CL) of different ages, and after hCG administration; and to examine the effects of EMs on vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) secretion and angiogenic activity released by cultured luteinizing granulosa cells in the presence and absence of hCG.
DESIGN: Experimental study.
SETTING: University.
PATIENT(S): Thirty-two healthy women of reproductive age.
INTERVENTION(S): Corpus luteum was collected at the time of minilaparotomy for tubal sterilization, at varying stages of the luteal phase (LP). Late-LP CL was collected 24 hours after IM …

INTRODUCTION: We conducted a phase Ib proof of mechanism trial to determine whether bexarotene (Targretin) increases central nervous system (CNS) apolipoprotein E (apoE) levels and alters Aβ metabolism in normal healthy individuals with the
METHODS: We used stable isotope labeling kinetics (SILK-ApoE and SILK-Aβ) to measure the effect of bexarotene on the turnover rate of apoE and Aβ peptides and stable isotope spike absolute quantitation (SISAQ) to quantitate their concentrations in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Normal subjects were treated for 3 days with bexarotene (n = 3 women, 3 men, average 32 years old) or placebo (n = 6 women, …

Objective: To identify risk factors for concussion among men's and women's college soccer athletes, and determine the likelihood of concussion based on those risk factors. Design and Setting: A short electronic survey was sent out to NCAA Division II universities in Ohio. Survey questions included demographics, soccer-related questions, and concussion-related questions. Participants: Men's and women's soccer athletes from division II universities in Ohio participating in varsity or junior varsity soccer at their respective universities who were at least 18 years of age. Intervention: An online survey. Main Outcome Measurement: Number of concussions sustained. Results: …
The Effect Of Signal-Independent Information And Sentence Predictability On Speech Comprehension In Babble Noise For Typical Hearing Young Adults, Mariah N. Smart
The Effect Of Signal-Independent Information And Sentence Predictability On Speech Comprehension In Babble Noise For Typical Hearing Young Adults, Mariah N. Smart
Linguistics Senior Research Projects
The influence of signal-independent information and sentence predictability on listeners’ comprehension was investigated by measuring transcription accuracy of a series of English sentences spoken in multi-talker babble background noise with circumstances varying between sets of sentences. Fourteen native English speaking young adults with no self-reported hearing or language disabilities completed written transcriptions of four sets of sentences. Listeners were presented with a control set of the signal alone, followed by a set of sentences spoken in multi-talker babble noise, then a set with visual presence of the speaker included, and finally a set where content context was given in addition …

Diabetes is a prevalent issue in the United States, with an estimated 8.1 million people un-diagnosed as of 2012. Health screenings have been proven to identify diseases earlier, thereby resulting in earlier and more satisfactory treatment. Community pharmacies can offer many of the same screenings as those in doctor offices. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of free health screenings in community pharmacies on patient follow-up, perceptions, and knowledge of diabetes through blood glucose screenings and patient education. The study design was a pre-post observational study using surveys, blood sugar screenings, and patient education on diabetes. …
