When babies are born to opioid-addicted mothers, they often develop Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS). NAS is characterized by symptoms associated with abrupt opioid withdrawal (“Neonatal Abstinence”, 2015). By preventing NAS in babies before they are born and properly caring for a baby with NAS after birth, we will aim to decrease the incidence of this condition and as its harmful effects in the lives of babies. In Ohio, there are many neonates suffering from NAS. The rates for babies born with NAS have quadrupled since 2011 when 2.2 out of every 1000 babies had NAS to 2015, where 12.3 out …

Background: Each year 124.9 per 100,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer worldwide (National Cancer Institute, n.d.). While it is a serious diagnosis, with modern screening and early detection, survivorship is higher than ever before. The current five-year survival rate for women diagnosed with cancer worldwide is 89.7% (National Cancer Institute, n.d.). The emphasis of this literature review is to address the perceived quality of life of this population. Between 1994 and 2013, the International Disaster Database recorded 6,873 natural disasters worldwide, which claimed 1.35 million lives or almost 68,000 lives on average each year. In addition, an average of 218 million people were affected by natural disasters per year during this 20-year period (Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters, 2015). All disasters have the potential to affect psychological health (U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, 2016) and children are especially vulnerable. Background: The efficacy of the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale (AIMS) and Compulsive Exercise Test (CET) as a screening tool for identifying runners who are at high-risk for incurring a stress fracture. A screening tool that incorporates both physical and psychological risk factors may be key in preventing stress fracture incidence in collegiate runners. Methods: A descriptive survey was designed and filled out by collegiate runners to collect information about various well-known risk factors as well as age, gender, anthropometric measures, injury history, competitive training years, weekly training mileage, and history of disordered eating. Background: Concussions are becoming an epidemic as millions of athletes are diagnosed with concussions each year. Concussions are not homogenous injuries and should be managed uniquely. Often health care providers focus on the physical side effects of concussions and ignore the psychological side effects. Methods: In order to determine the prevalence of psychological side effects resulting from concussions and the frequency of ATCs or team physicians managing their psychological symptoms we sent out a survey. Background: The prehospital care of spinal injuries is a debated topic amongst those in the area of emergency medicine. One challenge modern medicine faces is the ability to repair large bone defects and stimulate healing. Small defects typically heal naturally, but large bone defects do not and current solutions are to replace the missing tissue with biologically inert materials such as titanium. This limits the amount of bone healing as the defect is not repaired but rather replaced. The focus of our research is to develop a method of using 3D printing to create biodegradable scaffolds which promote bone in-growth and replacement. An estimated 40% to 60% of children in foster care have clinically significant emotional or behavioral problems (US Public Health Service, 2000). Children in foster care experience a range of complex psychosocial issues due to a loss of stability in a foundational biological family unit.
