The Youngest Victims Of The Opioid Epidemic, Katelyn E. Miller, Abby Reed Apr 2018

The Youngest Victims Of The Opioid Epidemic, Katelyn E. Miller, Abby Reed

The Research and Scholarship Symposium (2013-2019)

When babies are born to opioid-addicted mothers, they often develop Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS). NAS is characterized by symptoms associated with abrupt opioid withdrawal (“Neonatal Abstinence”, 2015). By preventing NAS in babies before they are born and properly caring for a baby with NAS after birth, we will aim to decrease the incidence of this condition and as its harmful effects in the lives of babies. In Ohio, there are many neonates suffering from NAS. The rates for babies born with NAS have quadrupled since 2011 when 2.2 out of every 1000 babies had NAS to 2015, where 12.3 out …

Quality Of Life Among Breast Cancer Survivors: A Review Of Literature, Autumn Sue Hankins, Kaitlyn Elizabeth Pees, Mikalyn Marie Heidish Apr 2018

Quality Of Life Among Breast Cancer Survivors: A Review Of Literature, Autumn Sue Hankins, Kaitlyn Elizabeth Pees, Mikalyn Marie Heidish

The Research and Scholarship Symposium (2013-2019)

Background: Each year 124.9 per 100,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer worldwide (National Cancer Institute, n.d.). While it is a serious diagnosis, with modern screening and early detection, survivorship is higher than ever before. The current five-year survival rate for women diagnosed with cancer worldwide is 89.7% (National Cancer Institute, n.d.). The emphasis of this literature review is to address the perceived quality of life of this population. Purpose: The purpose of this literature review was to determine how women who have survived a diagnosis of breast cancer perceive their quality of life (QOL). Methods: This review examined research …

Pediatric Experiences Of Ptsd Related To Natural Disasters, Victoria J. Denen, Julianna H. Ruckersfeldt, Wyatt S. Kyser Apr 2018

Pediatric Experiences Of Ptsd Related To Natural Disasters, Victoria J. Denen, Julianna H. Ruckersfeldt, Wyatt S. Kyser

The Research and Scholarship Symposium (2013-2019)

Between 1994 and 2013, the International Disaster Database recorded 6,873 natural disasters worldwide, which claimed 1.35 million lives or almost 68,000 lives on average each year. In addition, an average of 218 million people were affected by natural disasters per year during this 20-year period (Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters, 2015). All disasters have the potential to affect psychological health (U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, 2016) and children are especially vulnerable. The purpose of this review of literature was to answer the question, “How do children and adolescents who have survived a form of severe natural disaster …

The Role Of Athletic Identity In The Etiology Of Stress Fractures In Collegiate Runners, Leah Mae Reeder, Kurt D. Beachy Apr 2018

The Role Of Athletic Identity In The Etiology Of Stress Fractures In Collegiate Runners, Leah Mae Reeder, Kurt D. Beachy

The Research and Scholarship Symposium (2013-2019)

Background: The efficacy of the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale (AIMS) and Compulsive Exercise Test (CET) as a screening tool for identifying runners who are at high-risk for incurring a stress fracture. A screening tool that incorporates both physical and psychological risk factors may be key in preventing stress fracture incidence in collegiate runners. Methods: A descriptive survey was designed and filled out by collegiate runners to collect information about various well-known risk factors as well as age, gender, anthropometric measures, injury history, competitive training years, weekly training mileage, and history of disordered eating. The AIMS and CET were included in …

The Prevalence Of Psychological Side Effects Of Concussions In Division Ii And Iii Athletes In Ohio, Ellen P S Dixon, Laura J. Weaver, Michael Weller Apr 2018

The Prevalence Of Psychological Side Effects Of Concussions In Division Ii And Iii Athletes In Ohio, Ellen P S Dixon, Laura J. Weaver, Michael Weller

The Research and Scholarship Symposium (2013-2019)

Background: Concussions are becoming an epidemic as millions of athletes are diagnosed with concussions each year. Concussions are not homogenous injuries and should be managed uniquely. Often health care providers focus on the physical side effects of concussions and ignore the psychological side effects. Methods: In order to determine the prevalence of psychological side effects resulting from concussions and the frequency of ATCs or team physicians managing their psychological symptoms we sent out a survey. The survey included seventeen questions related to demographics and concussion symptoms that were sent to Division II and III athletes in Ohio over the age …

Common Spine Boarding Practices In The Athletic Setting: A Survey Of Athletic Trainers And Athletic Training Students, Jamie Lynne Field, Michael S. Weller Apr 2018

Common Spine Boarding Practices In The Athletic Setting: A Survey Of Athletic Trainers And Athletic Training Students, Jamie Lynne Field, Michael S. Weller

The Research and Scholarship Symposium (2013-2019)

Background: The prehospital care of spinal injuries is a debated topic amongst those in the area of emergency medicine. There is great risk for a spinal cord injury following a direct trauma.1 This risk is increased after medical professionals have come to the aid of the victim, increasing risk for further injury from 1.8%-10% in a hospital and up to 25% at the injury scene.1 Past research has shown the need for improved care and education of spinal injuries. There are many areas of dispute under the general topic of spine boarding. Methods: The researcher drafted a two part survey …

3d Printed Pla Scaffolds To Promote Healing Of Large Bone Defects, Jacob W. Cole, Tiera Martinelli, Mitchell T. Ryan, Sarah G. Seman, Daniel Sidle, Stephen R. Smith, Rocco J. Rotello, Timothy L. Norman Apr 2018

3d Printed Pla Scaffolds To Promote Healing Of Large Bone Defects, Jacob W. Cole, Tiera Martinelli, Mitchell T. Ryan, Sarah G. Seman, Daniel Sidle, Stephen R. Smith, Rocco J. Rotello, Timothy L. Norman

The Research and Scholarship Symposium (2013-2019)

One challenge modern medicine faces is the ability to repair large bone defects and stimulate healing. Small defects typically heal naturally, but large bone defects do not and current solutions are to replace the missing tissue with biologically inert materials such as titanium. This limits the amount of bone healing as the defect is not repaired but rather replaced. The focus of our research is to develop a method of using 3D printing to create biodegradable scaffolds which promote bone in-growth and replacement. To accomplish this we used poly lactic acid (PLA) filament and a desktop 3D printer. To promote …

The Effect Of Kinship Foster Care Compared To Non-Kinship Foster Care On Resiliency, Heidi M. Vizino, Alyssa B. Bergthold Apr 2018

The Effect Of Kinship Foster Care Compared To Non-Kinship Foster Care On Resiliency, Heidi M. Vizino, Alyssa B. Bergthold

The Research and Scholarship Symposium (2013-2019)

An estimated 40% to 60% of children in foster care have clinically significant emotional or behavioral problems (US Public Health Service, 2000). Children in foster care experience a range of complex psychosocial issues due to a loss of stability in a foundational biological family unit. Research shows that placement type may have an impact on a child’s socioemotional resiliency and level of access to needed mental health services (Lynch, 2011; Smithgall, Yang, & Weiner 2013; Winokur, 2014). The purpose of this literature review was to evaluate the effect of foster home placement type, specifically kinship foster care compared to non-kinship …
