Approximately 22 percent of the world population is estimated to be infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The largest number of cases are seen in Sub-Saharan Africa, India, and the islands of Southeast Asia, while North America and Western Europe are “low incidence” regions.1 In the US, most cases are seen in foreign-born individuals who emigrate from high-incidence countries. Despite the low incidence in the US, prevention and control of Tuberculosis (TB) remain an important component of Public Health.2 Here we present a case of a patient of Vietnamese origin with reactivation TB and rare manifestations of TB.

A Case Report Of Acute Idiopathic Hepatitis Requiring Liver Transplant, Nathan Rim, Nevin Varghese, Md, Zachary Pang, Md
The Medicine Forum
Acute liver injury may be very difficult to treat, especially when the etiology is unknown. We describe a case of a patient who presented with signs and symptoms of acute liver injury and went through an extensive work-up that did not reveal a definitive cause. The lack of diagnosis can be distressing for the patient, so it is important to regularly communicate the current plan and potential future necessary steps (such as a transplant surgery) to facilitate smooth, informed decision-making throughout the whole process.

Investigating The Role Of Ebf3a In Craniofacial Development, Shujan A. Sharafeldeen
Undergraduate Theses, Capstones, and Recitals
Proper craniofacial development requires many genes. Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) allows us to identify genes expressed in precursor cells for craniofacial structures, but the function of many of these genes in craniofacial development has yet to be characterized. In our scRNA-seq of cranial neural crest cells (NCCs), which are precursor cells for the craniofacial skeleton, we found a gene called early B-cell factor 3 (ebf3a) that may be involved in craniofacial development. In our scRNA-seq data, ebf3a expression is restricted to cranial NCCs of the dorsal and ventral domains of pharyngeal arches 1 and 2. In humans, damaging variants in …

Hairy Tongue Associated With The Use Of Baricitinib Therapy For Ophiasis Pattern Alopecia Areata, Anthony Gaspari
Hairy Tongue Associated With The Use Of Baricitinib Therapy For Ophiasis Pattern Alopecia Areata, Anthony Gaspari
Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers
We report a case of hairy tongue that developed in a young Caucasian
woman during systemic baricitinib therapy for severe alopecia areata.
Because she experienced good clinical regrowth of her hair during
treatment, she did not want to interrupt therapy. We recommended she
use a toothbrush to debride her tongue on a daily basis, which was
successful. Hairy tongue most commonly occurs in elderly, debilitated
males with poor oral hygiene. It is thought to occur because of overgrowth
of chromogenic bacteria and/or yeast on the tongue. This unusual side
effect during baricitinib therapy suggests that immune suppression may
play a …

Shift Your Energy To Shift Your Burnout, Laura Brenner Dds
Shift Your Energy To Shift Your Burnout, Laura Brenner Dds
Articulator Magazine
This article explores why standard burnout treatments like self-care activities and practice ownership often provide temporary relief but fail to address the root cause. The author identifies a common pattern among burnt-out, "Compassionate Caretakers" - a tendency towards people-pleasing, perfectionism, and self-sacrifice driven by a need for validation. In contrast, those who avoid burnout ("Solution Seekers") maintain healthy boundaries, let go of others' problems, and operate from a mindset of win-win solutions. By reframing perspectives through self-awareness and allowing self-compassion, Compassionate Caretakers can shift to become Solution Seekers. This inner work provides the energy to genuinely address external burnout triggers …

Untreated hearing loss oftentimes has significant adverse effects on the quality of life of older adults. The associations include, but are not limited to loneliness, isolation, anxiety, and a decrease in cognitive function. Hearing aids significantly improve audibility, social interactions, and decrease feelings of loneliness or isolation. However, despite technological advances, and evidence of positive outcomes associated with hearing aid use, uptake and continued use of hearing aids remain low. Accessibility and affordability are considered barriers to uptake. Purchasing a prescription hearing aid from an audiologist is the traditional approach to receiving an amplification device, but the advent of over …
