Evidence of synergic health effects of co-supplementation with vitamin D and probiotics is emerging. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses PRISMA statement, scientific databases and the grey literature were searched, and a narrative review and risk of bias assessment were conducted. Seven randomized controlled trials were included, which had low risk of bias. Six studies were double-blind, and once single-blind, extended over 6-12 weeks, and included 50-105 participants. Conditions explored included schizophrenia, gestational diabetes, type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease, polycystic ovarian syndrome, osteopenia, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and infantile colic. Supplementation frequency was daily …

  • Researchers often encounter issues while attempting to deliver complete doses of a desired supplement/placebo when conducting research in outdoor environments. The problem faced by our research team was how to efficiently deliver 6.4 grams of Beta Alanine (BA) powder to subjects while conducting a hiking study on a windy trail in Southern Utah. To minimize the potential impact of the weather, and to maximize the efficiency of delivery, we determined a premixed bolus of BA contained in individual commercially available 8oz water bottles was the most efficient delivery method. The purpose of this article is to detail the development and …

Abstract

Background

Vitamin D deficiency (serum 25(OH)D<50nmol/l) is common in Ireland, particularly amongst older adults, hospital inpatients and nursing home residents. Vitamin D deficiency is associated with increased risk of acute viral respiratory infection and community acquired pneumonia, with several molecular mechanisms proposed to explain this association. Vitamin D supplementation has also been shown to reduce the risk of respiratory infection.

Vitamin D and Covid-19

Correction of vitamin D deficiency is thought to suppress CD26, a putative adhesion molecule for Covid-19 host cell invasion. Vitamin D may also attenuate interferon gamma (IFNγ) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) inflammatory responses, both potent predictors of poorer outcome in critically-ill ventilated patients including those with Covid-19.

Vitamin D Requirements

Irish adults require 25-30μg/d of vitamin D3, an intake not achievable by diet alone, to reliably maintain serum 25(OH)D levels >50nmol/l. Supplementation with doses up to 100μg/d has been shown to be safe for adults, and many agencies and expert …

Supplementation With Aqueous Extract Of Talinum Triangulare And Effect On Thehematology And Serum Biochemistry In Growing Pullets, Chinwe Justina Aronu, Aruh Ottah Anaga, Benjamin Nwabueze Marire, Silvanus Maduka Anika Jan 2020

Supplementation With Aqueous Extract Of Talinum Triangulare And Effect On Thehematology And Serum Biochemistry In Growing Pullets, Chinwe Justina Aronu, Aruh Ottah Anaga, Benjamin Nwabueze Marire, Silvanus Maduka Anika

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The effects of administration of Talinum triangulare aqueous extract on the hematology and serum biochemistry of growing pullets was studied. Ninety ISA Brown chicks purchased at 1 day old were randomly assigned into three groups: PA, PB, and PC. Pullets in groups PA and PB received 1000 mg of extract from dried T. triangulare and from freshly harvested T. triangulare per liter of water, respectively. Pullets in group PC served as the unsupplemented control. Hematology and serum biochemistry were evaluated at 2-month intervals within the 6-month period of the experiment following standard procedures. Feed and water were administered ad libitum. …
