The Case For Not Giving Birth, Amanda D'Ambrosio Dec 2019

The Case For Not Giving Birth, Amanda D'Ambrosio

Capstones

Racism in medicine and a broken healthcare system has led to a maternal mortality crisis in the United States, one that disproportionately harms Black mothers. Though lawmakers and medical professionals have introduced legislation to expand healthcare and combat discrimination in clinical settings, reproductive justice leaders encourage new mothers to lean on their communities as a solution to the crisis.

Chronic critical illness is a global clinical issue affecting millions of sepsis survivors annually. Survivors report chronic skeletal muscle weakness and development of new functional limitations that persist for years. To delineate mechanisms of sepsis-induced chronic weakness, we first surpassed a critical barrier by establishing a murine model of sepsis with ICU-like interventions that allows for the study of survivors. We show that sepsis survivors have profound weakness for at least 1 month, even after recovery of muscle mass. Abnormal mitochondrial ultrastructure, impaired respiration and electron transport chain activities, and persistent protein oxidative damage were evident in the muscle of …

Pharmacologic And Nonpharmacologic Approaches To Palliative Care In Oncology, Daniel Powell, Sunitha Johns, Samia Alam, Isabel E. Cwikla, Brendan Rasor, David W. Koh

Pharmacy and Wellness Review

In recent decades, few fields have changed as drastically as oncology. A wide variety of approaches must be taken in order to best care for cancer patients. With the globalization of health care and modern society, nontraditional management of cancer symptoms is once again increasing in popularity. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) has also recently updated their palliative care guidelines. These guidelines provide a detailed approach for the care of a wide range of cancer patients but largely focus on traditional pharmacotherapy. An increasing number of studies are being conducted on nonpharmacologic approaches to care for patients with cancer. …

Expression And Function Of Snornas In Acute Myeloid Leukemia, Wayne Alsworth Warner Aug 2019

Expression And Function Of Snornas In Acute Myeloid Leukemia, Wayne Alsworth Warner

Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Small nucleolar RNAs (snoRNAs) are non-coding RNAs that contribute to ribosome biogenesis and RNA splicing by modifying ribosomal RNA and spliceosome RNAs, respectively. These modifications are critical for a variety of cellular processes, including ribosomal biogenesis and splicing of RNAs. Recent studies have suggested an expanded role for snoRNAs beyond ribosomal biogenesis and splicing, including, regulation of chromatin structure, metabolism, and neoplastic transformation. The contribution of snoRNAs to the regulation of normal and malignant hematopoiesis is largely unknown. The lack of a method to accurately and comprehensively assess snoRNA expression has limited research in this area. In particular, array-based methods …

The Benefits And Accessibility Of Integrative Exercise In Geriatric Populations, Elizabeth Nisper Jul 2019

The Benefits And Accessibility Of Integrative Exercise In Geriatric Populations, Elizabeth Nisper

Honors Projects

There are many physical and mental benefits of conventional exercise and they have been well-studied. However, integrative exercise practices aim to encompass more than physical fitness. There is also a spiritual/ethical component when taking into account aspects such as meditation and mindfulness. By examining a number of different health domains, we can study whether the benefits of yoga and tai chi extend beyond the benefits of exercise more broadly. While the short-term physical fitness benefits of other cardio and strength training may exceed those of integrative practices, yoga and tai chi appear to be equally as beneficial in the long …

The Gift Of A Stranger, Angel Mauricio Marquez Jun 2019

The Gift Of A Stranger, Angel Mauricio Marquez

be Still

As we are taught in our physics classes, energy is neither created nor destroyed it is simply transferred. Whether that energy manifests itself as power to fuel an engine or as knowledge to fuel a life of passion and intimacies, the energy influences one in the same. I simply seek one thing out of life, that those who come into contact with my energy find themselves transformed in the subtlest of ways so that they may, in turn, inspire another so that the cycle continues on and on.

Implementation Of An Asthma Action Plan In A Pediatric Outpatient Clinic, Noelle Cerdan May 2019

Implementation Of An Asthma Action Plan In A Pediatric Outpatient Clinic, Noelle Cerdan

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

A combination of asthma evidence-based education by nurse practitioners and other healthcare providers as well as self-management by patients with asthma and their caregivers are necessary to provide effective asthma care. According to the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP) guidelines from the National Institute of Health (NIH), effective asthma care includes a detailed Asthma Action Plan (AAP). However, despite this evidence-based recommendation for all patients with asthma, studies suggest many healthcare providers do not routinely utilize an AAP.

The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project was to develop and evaluate a process for the integration …

An Analysis Of Major Issues For Culturally-Minded Professionals In Women's Health Care, Victoria Clark Apr 2019

An Analysis Of Major Issues For Culturally-Minded Professionals In Women's Health Care, Victoria Clark

Victoria Clark

Women's health care professionals, such as general physicians, obstetricians and gynecologists, midwives, nurses, and doulas, in the US need to be aware of cultural issues and disparities. Minorities and migrant women experience cultural challenges and disparities when receiving health care in the US. Without cultural sensitivity, patient care is compromised. Pregnancy and childbirth practices vary widely by culture, and potential differences in perspectives, beliefs, and treatment of these are critical issues for women’s health care professionals to study. Female genital cutting (FGC), obstetric fistulas (OF), and female cancer are also discussed in this paper.

Role Of Dyslipidemia On Lipid Metabolism In Maintenance Hemodialysis Patients, Eno Latifi Jan 2019

Role Of Dyslipidemia On Lipid Metabolism In Maintenance Hemodialysis Patients, Eno Latifi

Wayne State University Dissertations

Maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients experience various abnormalities such as systemic inflammation (SI), oxidative stress (OS), and dyslipidemia (D). Defined as an imbalance of plasma lipids, lipoproteins, and lipid metabolism enzymes, D has been associated with a rise in morbidity and mortality within ESRD patients due to cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, the contribution of each of these parameters to D is poorly understood; moreover, the impact of the following parameters on dyslipidemia in different ethnicities is unknown. Hence, the objective of this study was to characterize D in a multi-ethnic cohort of ESRD patients. We hypothesized that the degree of dyslipidemia …

Alexander Koppel: Pioneer - Physician - Provider, Max Koppel

Jefferson Biographies

Alexander Koppel was born to immigrant parents on the Lower East Side of New York City in 1905. Early in his life, his mother was forced to return to Austria to her tenant farmer parents with Alexander and his two sisters because of a severe downturn in the American economy. A few years later, his mother brilliantly sensed the upcoming disastrous World War in 1913, and returned with the three children to Wilmington, Delaware where by that time, her husband, Samuel Koppel, had established the Wilmington Window Cleaning Company.

Alexander Koppel seized the opportunity for higher education made available to …
