The effects of interstitial lung disease (ILD) create a significant burden on patients, unsettling almost every domain of their lives, disrupting their physical and emotional well-being and impairing their quality of life (QoL). Because many ILDs are incurable, and there are limited reliably-effective, life-prolonging treatment options available, the focus of many therapeutic interventions has been on improving or maintaining how patients with ILD feel and function, and by extension, their QoL. Such patient-centred outcomes are best assessed by patients themselves through tools that capture their perceptions, which inherently incorporate their values and judgements. These patient-reported outcome measures (PROs) can be …

Home Invasive Mechanical Ventilation Users Quality Of Life: Is Response Shift Supported?, Casey Faigle
Home Invasive Mechanical Ventilation Users Quality Of Life: Is Response Shift Supported?, Casey Faigle
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
The use of home invasive mechanical ventilation (HIMV) has risen over the past ten years due to improved health outcomes, transitioning more complex care to the home, and evidence supports the benefits of this therapy. In order to plan care for this population, it is important to understand issues that affect an individual’s quality of life (QoL). Previous research provided mixed results, limited guidance of factors that affect QoL, and lacked a theoretical framework that lends questions to validity.
The first manuscript, Home Invasive Mechanical Ventilation Users’ Quality of Life: A Review of Literature, provides a literature review of available …

Women's Quality Of Life After Leaving An Abusive Relationship: The Effects Of Past And Ongoing Intimate Partner Violence, Mastery And Social Support, Diana Jaradat
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is considered a major stressor that threatens the lives of women globally. Although qualitative research suggests that IPV has substantial negative effects on women’s quality of life, few quantitative studies have examined the quality of life of women who have experienced IPV due, in part, to the lack of an appropriate, brief measure of QOL. Consequently, little is known about the contextual process by which IPV experiences affect women’s quality of life (QOL) after leaving an abusive relationship. Mastery and social support are two important resources that women may use to deal with IPV but whether …

Hand Issues On Scleroderma Patients, Ana Font Hernandez
Publications and Research
Based on the design of a 3D-printed spoon prototype, we surveyed scleroderma patients about the device's value. 75% of patients mentioned having problems on their hands due to scleroderma. 85% of patients said their hand form changed because of the disease. Answers to the frequency or speed of the changes provide inconclusive results. The 3D printing technology has the potential to solve specific issues scleroderma patients face in their daily lives. Nevertheless, further research is needed to fully understand how hands shape change over time.

Life Or Death And Other False Dichotomies: A Theology Of Hospice, Kayla Stock
Life Or Death And Other False Dichotomies: A Theology Of Hospice, Kayla Stock
School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses
Feelings of fear and failure are often ascribed to death and dying; hospice offers a new way forward. This paper considers fear of death from a personal and evolutionary psychological perspective, then branching into the ways fear of death and death anxiety are made manifest in the health care system. Within the health care system, in particular the biomedical model of health care, death is construed as the enemy, the ultimate mark of failure. In one sense, death is fundamentally unknown, and is therefore naturally fear-inducing. Simultaneously, death is also both singularly and universally knowable; it is the only thing …
