Objective: The purpose of this pilot quality improvement study was to implement SmartPhrases and assess its impact on adherence to the Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA) guideline for Group A Streptococcus (GAS) pharyngitis testing and treatment in pediatric patients ages 1-16 years old. The aim was to use SmartPhrases to improve adherence with the IDSA guideline by 30% for GAS pharyngitis swabbing and 10% for appropriate antibiotic prescribing in three months.

Epilepsy is the most frequent, chronic, neurological condition in childhood, impacting 0.5 to 1% of the population. Documented learning problems associated with childhood epilepsy include memory problems, attention deficits, reading difficulties, and processing speed abnormalities. Epilepsy also impacts psychological health with poor self-esteem, a high incidence of bullying, and poor school performance. The Every Student Succeeds Act identifies the school nurse as a leader in chronic disease management; advocating for students to receive the resources and support they need to achieve academic success. The goal of this project is to examine the relationship between childhood punishment and experiencing intimate partner violence (IPV) as an adult. Using an anonymous, self-report survey, students from Georgia Southern University were asked about their experiences with IPV, as well as their experiences of childhood punishment administered by both mother and father. The results show that children who receive corporal, verbal, and emotional punishment from their mother are more likely to experience all forms of IPV later in life. When analyzing the same relationships with fathers, corporal punishment is not associated with IPV while verbal and emotional punishment is.

This is characterised by an acute worsening of respiratory symptoms in the setting of bacterial infection and results in significant morbidity and mortality. Appropriate antimicrobial therapy is fundamental to management, in particular aminoglycoside antibiotics. Tobramycin is the preferred aminoglycoside of choice, usually administered intravenously for 7 to 14 days.

Mild traumatic brain injuries in the pediatric population are prevalent and pervasive. Identification and recognition of concussion symptoms is complicated by variable symptom manifestation and duration. The purpose of this evidence-based DNP project was to implement a concussion education intervention to increase parental recognition and knowledge regarding pediatric concussions. Individualized, in-person education, evidence-based injury prevention, symptom recognition, and collaboration encouraged lifestyle modification to reduce childhood injuries. Evaluation of parental concerns concluded a desire for future health promotion education resulting in bimonthly meetings to further improve personal, familial, and professional health.

Study Design: Review of three randomized control trials (RCTs) published in the year 2016.

Pediatric sepsis is a major contributor to childhood morbidity and mortality. Tools for predicting sepsis in pediatric patients have had poor predictive ability nor been validated. Risk assessment screening tools are effective at earlier detection of sepsis. The implementation of an evidence-based pediatric sepsis screening tool could reduce time to detect and diagnose severe sepsis so that patient treatment could occur earlier. This was a quality improvement project that evaluated a sepsis screening tool predictive validity at a children’s hospital.
