Aim: To identify the impact of severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus 2 (COVID-19) on the mental health status of occupational therapy (OT) practitioners providing direct patient care.

Methods: The researchers administered a survey to identify OT practitioners’ perceptions of mental health prior to and during the pandemic. The survey was posted online via a link on social media pages related to occupational therapy professional groups. Participants completed the self-administered survey consisting of 16 questions. Some participants provided narrative responses to select survey questions, which asked about their mental health prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background: COVID-19 infection is associated with neurologic and psychiatric morbidity that suggests a direct effect of the virus or secondary effect of an inflammatory process. These neuropsychiatric consequences may increase the likelihood of schizophrenia in the offspring of women who become infected with COVID-19 during their pregnancy.

Methods: We performed a directed narrative review of the literature focusing on the proposed pathophysiological processes that lead to schizophrenia and known pathological consequences of COVID-19 infection.

COVID-19, while primarily recognized for its pulmonary and systemic manifestations, afflicts the cardiovascular system through various abnormalities. Notably, right ventricular (RV) involvement leading to dysfunction and failure is a manifestation seen in up to 20% of severe COVID patients. RV severity correlates with overall COVID severity, serving as a prognostic marker. Data review reveals that RV failure was largely underdiagnosed, particularly early on in the pandemic. The therapy approach for RV failure in patients with COVID should focus on supporting overall RV perfusion pressure, maintaining sinus rhythm, optimizing RV loading conditions and contractility, and addressing anticoagulation and thrombus-related conditions. The COVID-19 pandemic created a global lockdown and restricted people from leaving their homes. The current study aimed to explore the impact of the pandemic on occupational engagement among health professional graduate students. A web-based survey consisting of quantitative and qualitative responses was sent out to graduate students enrolled in health professional programs at a private university in the Northeast and received 86 responses. Hiccups, medically referred as singultus, is a condition that results from involuntary contraction of the diaphragm and intercostal muscles. Singultus is usually a self-limiting condition which typically lasts less than 48 hours but in rare cases, can persist greater than 48 hours. This is a case of a 48 year-old male who was prescribed dexamethasone for COVID-19 but developed intractable singultus for two weeks. Patient was unable to tolerate diet due to intractable singultus leading to vomiting. He underwent various non-pharmacological maneuvers and pharmacotherapy without resolution. Due to the widespread effects of COVID-19, mental health professionals need to understand the lived experiences of survivors. Data were collected from YouTube videos (N = 52), which contained firsthand perspectives from COVID-19 survivors. Survivors understood the high stakes of COVID-19, reported the dual threat to physical and mental health, entered “survival mode,” and had both positive and negative reflections on the experience. Implications for mental health professionals and future research directions are included.

Introduction: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has forced healthcare systems to disseminate their training materials quickly and broadly, including instruction on identifying cases of infection through correct nasopharyngeal swabbing. Incorrect nasopharyngeal swabbing technique leads to substandard sampling, patient discomfort, and increased risk of complications. Due to the combination of age, comorbidities, and close living quarters, residents at long-term care facilities (LTCFs) are at particularly high risk of severe symptoms and death due to COVID-19.

Methods

This cross-sectional study examines the relationship between demographic characteristics, symptom severity, and length of viral shedding in 49 residents testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 at a LTCF in West Virginia (WV).

Results

Introduction: Veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV ECMO) is an indicated treatment for severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) refractory to conventional medical treatment. Severe ARDS is a common complication of CoVID-19 infection. Subsequently, the efficacy of VV ECMO in CoVID-19 severe ARDS patients must be investigated. ECMO is a resource-intensive treatment modality, meaning that its use must be reserved for patients with robust indications and paucity of contraindications.
