Mobile Health Clinics (MHCs) are an effective method of delivering healthcare by increasing access to populations experiencing healthcare disparities (Yu, Hill, Ricks, Bennet, Oriol, 2017; Edgerly, El-Sayed, Druzin, Kiernan, Daniels, 2007; Guruge, Hunter, Barker, McNally, Magalhaes, 2010; Song, Hill, Bennet, Vavasos, Oriol, 2013; Hill et al., 2012). Chronic kidney disease (CKD), prevalent in more the 10% of the United States population is a progressive, degenerative disease affecting the renal function of afflicted individuals. In recent decades CKD has gained awareness among clinicians and medical professional due to growing concern for the many complications that arise in patients with CKD. For providers, CKD patient populations pose a significant challenge in terms of quality treatment because of the many associated risk factors and co-morbidities associated with a CKD diagnosis. Atherosclerosis is a cardiovascular disease caused by a chronic inflammatory response in the cells lining blood vessels, vascular endothelial cells. In these cells, a network of interacting proteins regulates inflammation. One of these proteins, PRMT5, regulates the inflammatory response by methylating other proteins involved in inflammation. For PRMT5 to carry out its function, it must first oligomerize with itself and various other proteins. In this study, I determined whether mutations to specific PRMT5 methylation sites affect its ability to oligomerize. By expressing PRMT5 in HEK293 cells and studying the effects of adding a chemical cross-linking agent, DMS, I was able …
