Purpose: To examine the prevalence of Demodex in two large, tertiary care, outpatient resident clinic settings; meanwhile, exploring demographic variables, use of ocular medications, and OTC cosmetic products with respect to prevalence. Lastly, analyze potential inadequacies in the rate of treatment amongst patients in the resident clinic setting.

Methods: A cross-sectional non-randomized, prospective study investigating the prevalence of Demodex folliculorum (DF) and brevis (DB) in patients presenting with blepharitis, and in control patients without clinical evidence of dry eye blepharitis syndrome (DEBS). Epilation of one eyelash from each lid was performed and studied under high power light microscopy. Each patient …

Purpose: Ophthalmic diagnosis in many avian species remains hindered by lack of normative values. This study aimed to establish normal ophthalmic parameters for select diagnostic tests in clinically normal Quaker parrots. Methods: Ninety-six captive Quaker parrots ages 8-18 years underwent ophthalmic examination to include assessment of neuro-ophthalmic reflexes, phenol red thread test, rebound tonometry, fluorescein staining, palpebral fissure length measurements, slit lamp biomicroscopy, indirect fundoscopy, and ocular ultrasound biometry. Results: Menace response, dazzle reflex, and direct pupillary light reflex were present for all Quaker parrots. Tear production (mean ± SD) was 13.3 ± 4.0 mm/15 sec and intraocular pressure (IOP, …

Burn related injury to the face involving the structures of the eyes, eyelids, eyelashes, and/or eyebrows could result in multiple reconstructive procedures to improve functional and cosmetic outcomes, and correct complications following poor acute phase management. This systematic review and meta-analysis compared 272 surgical to 535 non-surgical interventions within one month of patients suffering burn-related injuries to 465 eyes, 253 eyelids, 90 eyelashes, and 0 eyebrows and evaluated associated outcomes and complications. The PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Scopus databases were systematically and independently searched. Patient and clinical characteristics, surgical and medical interventions, outcomes and complications were …
