Prevalence Of Stress, Urge, And Mixed Urinary Incontinence In Women, Chaandini Jayachandran Sep 2007

Prevalence Of Stress, Urge, And Mixed Urinary Incontinence In Women, Chaandini Jayachandran

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Urinary Incontinence is a common affliction that impairs quality of life and restricts social activity in adult women. Based on etiology and pathophysiology, urinary incontinence is classified into Stress, Urge, and Mixed urinary incontinence. Knowledge of the specific type of incontinence helps in determining course of treatment. A retrospective, descriptive, observational study was designed to determine the percentage of new patients seeking treatment for bladder complaints, who were identified by Medical, Epidemiological, and Social aspects of Aging (MESA) questionnaire to reflect Stress, Urge, or Mixed urinary incontinence. The secondary aim was to investigate any trends other variables studied that showed …

Approval Of New Drugs By The U. S. Food And Drug Administration: Problems With The Process And Access To Unapproved Drugs, Christine M. Hoeft-Loyer Jan 2007

Approval Of New Drugs By The U. S. Food And Drug Administration: Problems With The Process And Access To Unapproved Drugs, Christine M. Hoeft-Loyer

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Today, the vast majority of drugs available for patient use have gone through a rigorous system of human clinical trials supervised by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), to ensure the drugs are safe and efficacious. There are now citizen advocacy groups that seek use of drugs not yet approved by the FDA, to be administered to terminally ill patients who have exhausted all other available means of therapy. The FDA has programs for terminal patients, under the supervision of their physicians, to use unapproved drugs; however, the advocacy groups seek access to drugs in much earlier phases than is …

Competencies And Physical Agent Modalities: An Investigation Of Clinical And Ethical Implications, Casey A. Lambert Jan 2007

Competencies And Physical Agent Modalities: An Investigation Of Clinical And Ethical Implications, Casey A. Lambert

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Occupational therapy has evolved from its early inception in diversional therapy to incorporate technologically advanced modalities into the professional domain. Over the last thirty years the profession has increasingly incorporated physical agent modalities (PAMs) into the treatment process. Throughout this process there has been both opposition and support for the inclusion of PAMs in occupational therapy. There are concerns from both sides regarding the proper training of therapists in the use of PAMs, how competency should be assessed, who is responsible for ensuring competency, and the ethical concerns with the use of these modalities.

This phenomenological study analyzed six therapists’ …

Serum Gamma-Glutamyltransferase And The Risk Of Type 2 Diabetes In A Population-Based Cohort Study Of Older Mexican Americans, Lynn Blythe Jan 2007

Serum Gamma-Glutamyltransferase And The Risk Of Type 2 Diabetes In A Population-Based Cohort Study Of Older Mexican Americans, Lynn Blythe

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Our objective was to test the hypothesis that increased GGT predicts an increased risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in elderly Mexican Americans.

Data from a population-based cohort study of 1789 community-dwelling Mexican American men and women, aged 60-101, in the SALSA study were used. Data for 1,203 participants without diabetes at baseline were evaluated for incident diabetes. Proportional hazard models were used to predict the probability of incident T2D by GGT level.

After adjustment for age, gender, smoking, alcohol use, and BMI, the risk of developing T2D associated with GGT was significant at 1.4 (95% CI 1.2 -1.7). However, …

Identification Of Symptom Domains In Ulcerative Colitis That Occur Frequently During Flares And Are Responsive To Changes In Disease Activity, Tahira M. Khan Jan 2007

Identification Of Symptom Domains In Ulcerative Colitis That Occur Frequently During Flares And Are Responsive To Changes In Disease Activity, Tahira M. Khan

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The aim of this study was to determine which symptom domains in ulcerative colitis (UC) are important in the evaluation of disease activity. An important symptom is that which 1) occurs during flares, 2) improves during effective therapy, and 3) resolves during remission. Twenty eight symptom domains were evaluated. Sixty subjects were surveyed, rating each symptom on three criteria with a 100 mm Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Important symptoms were defined a priori as those whose median VAS rating for all 3 criteria was significantly greater than 50. Thirteen of the 28 symptom domains proved to be both frequent in …

Nutrient Intake In College Students In A Midwestern Regional University Compared To The Recommended Dietary Guidelines, Rukmini Sen Jan 2007

Nutrient Intake In College Students In A Midwestern Regional University Compared To The Recommended Dietary Guidelines, Rukmini Sen

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The prevalence of obesity is problematic in the United States. The objectives of the present study were to determine the extent of obesity in students studying at Eastern Michigan University and to evaluate their diet quality. Body Mass Index (BMI) of students (19-30 years, n=100) was measured from self-reported heights and weights as a benchmark of their weight category. Intakes of total energy (kilocalories), macronutrients and key micronutrients were assessed from three-day food diaries maintained by participants and compared with the Dietary Reference Intake Standards. Results indicated that 4% of EMU students were underweight, 52% were within a normal weight …
