Cognitive deficits have been regarded as one of the most significant clinical symptoms of depressive disorder. Accumulating evidence has shown that apolipoprotein B (ApoB) levels, which are responsible for inducing neurodegeneration, may be involved in cognitive deficits. This study examines cognitive deficits, and the correlation of serum ApoB levels with cognitive deficits of depressive disorder. 90 depressive patients and 90 healthy controls with matched age and gender were recruited. Cognition was assessed using the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS). Serum ApoB levels in depressive patients were measured by immunoturbidimetric method. Our results showed that depressive patients …

Identification Of Dietary Patterns Associated With Blood Pressure In A Sample Of Overweight Australian Adults, Shirin Anil, Karen E. Charlton, Linda C. Tapsell, Yasmine Probst, Rhoda Ndanuko, Marijka Batterham Jan 2016

The dietary approaches to stop hypertension (DASH) diet provides strong evidence for an optimal dietary pattern for blood pressure (BP) control; however, investigation at the level of key foods in a dietary pattern is sparse. This study aimed to assess the relationship between dietary patterns driven by key foods with BP in a sample of obese Australian adults. Secondary analysis was conducted on baseline data of 118 participants (45.1±8.4 years, mean BP=124.1±15.8/72.6±9.2 mm Hg) recruited in a weight reduction randomized controlled trial (ACTRN12608000425392). Dietary assessment was by a validated diet history interview. The average of three office BP measurements was …

Background/Aims: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major health issue worldwide. The aim of this study was to explore factors associated with CKD progression in Australian nephrology practices. Methods: This was a retrospective study utilising an electronic medical record (EMR), Audit4 (Software for Specialists, Australia). The baseline visit was defined as the first entry into the EMR. The primary outcome was the rate of change in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Results: 1,328 patients were included with a mean eGFR at baseline of 37.4 ± 0.7 ml/min/1.73 m2, a mean follow-up of 17.7 months and a mean annual rate of …

Prevention Of Obesity-Associated Colon Cancer By (-)-Epigallocatechin-3 Gallate And Curcumin, Jiezhong Chen Jan 2012

Prevention Of Obesity-Associated Colon Cancer By (-)-Epigallocatechin-3 Gallate And Curcumin, Jiezhong Chen

Obesity is now recognised as a major global health problem. It accounts for a large proportion of the population and is increasing in both developed and developing countries. Epidemiological evidence and studies in animal models showed that obesity increased the incidence of colon cancer. As obesity is difficult to prevent and treat, it is important to find effective approaches to prevent obesity-associated colon cancer. The prevention strategy should be different from that used for the treatment as clinically used drugs are not suitable for the prevention due to side-effects and cost. Phytochemicals are ideal for the prevention. This review summarises …

Functional Expression Of The Damage-Associated Molecular Pattern Receptor P2x7 On Canine Kidney Epithelial Cells, Iman Jalilian, Mari Spildrejorde, Aine Seavers, Belinda L. Curtis, Jason D. Mcarthur, Ronald Sluyter Jan 2012

Functional Expression Of The Damage-Associated Molecular Pattern Receptor P2x7 On Canine Kidney Epithelial Cells, Iman Jalilian, Mari Spildrejorde, Aine Seavers, Belinda L. Curtis, Jason D. Mcarthur, Ronald Sluyter

Epithelial cells are important in inflammation and immunity. In this study, we examined if Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) epithelial cells express functional P2X7 receptors, which bind the damage-associated molecular pattern extracellular adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP). Reverse transcription (RT)-PCR and immunoblotting revealed the expression of P2X7 in MDCK cells. A flow cytometric assay demonstrated that ATP or 2'(3')-O-(4-benzoylbenzoyl)ATP induced ethidium(+) uptake into MDCK cells, and that this process was impaired by the P2X7 antagonists KN-62 and A438079. RT-PCR also demonstrated the presence of Toll-like receptor 4, NALP3, caspase-1, interleukin-1β and interleukin-18 in MDCK cells, as well as in positive control LPS-primed canine …

A Community Outbreak Of Cryptosporidiosis In Sydney Associated With A Public Swimming Facility: A Case-Control Study, Darren J. Mayne, Kelly-Anne Ressler, Diane Smith, Gareth Hockey, Susan J. Botham, Mark J. Ferson Jan 2011

A Community Outbreak Of Cryptosporidiosis In Sydney Associated With A Public Swimming Facility: A Case-Control Study, Darren J. Mayne, Kelly-Anne Ressler, Diane Smith, Gareth Hockey, Susan J. Botham, Mark J. Ferson

Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute

In February, 2008, the South Eastern Sydney Illawarra Public Health Unit investigated an outbreak of cryptosporidiosis within the south east region of Sydney, Australia. Thirty-one cases with laboratory-confirmed cryptosporidiosis and 97 age- and geographically matched controls selected by random digit dialling were recruited into a case-control study and interviewed for infection risk factors. Cryptosporidiosis was associated with swimming at Facility A (matched odds ratio = 19.4, 95% confidence interval: 3.7-100.8) and exposure to household contacts with diarrhoea (matched odds ratio = 7.7, 95% confidence interval: 1.9-31.4) in multivariable conditional logistic regression models. A protective effect for any animal contact was …

The Possible Role Of Il-17 In Obesity-Associated Cancer, Tiphaine Gislette, Jiezhong Chen Jan 2010

The Possible Role Of Il-17 In Obesity-Associated Cancer, Tiphaine Gislette, Jiezhong Chen

Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute

Obesity and overweight have become major medical and social problems. Both are increasing worldwide; two-thirds of the population in developed countries is obese or overweight. Obesity has been associated with many comorbidities, including diabetes and heart disease. Studies have also found that obesity is one of the risk factors involved in increased cancer incidence. Many obesity-related factors are responsible, including increased blood levels of insulin/IGF, IL-6, TNF-alpha, and leptin, and decreased blood levels of adiponectin. Recently, it has been shown that IL-17 levels increase in obese patients. IL-17 is well known to increase carcinogenesis; thus, increased IL-17 levels in obesity …

Background: Inappropriate responses to normal intestinal bacteria may be involved in the development of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD, e.g. Crohn's Disease (CD), Ulcerative Colitis (UC)) and variations in the host genome may mediate this process. IL-10 gene-deficient (Il10-/-) mice develop CD-like colitis mainly in the colon, in part due to inappropriate responses to normal intestinal bacteria including Enterococcus strains, and have therefore been used as an animal model of CD. Comprehensive characterization of changes in cecum gene expression levels associated with inflammation in the Il10-/- mouse model has recently been reported. Our aim was to characterize changes in colonic gene …
