Friendship And Informant Characteristics Associated With The Agreement Among Adolescent And Friend Ratings Of Behavior Problems, Brea-Anne Lauer, Kimberly Renk

The present study investigated the relative agreement between adolescent self-reports and friend informant reports of behavior problems as well as factors that might impact this agreement. High school students were placed into friendship dyads based on perceived friendship closeness and rated friendship quality, their own internalizing and externalizing behavior problems, and the behavior problems of their matched friend. Self- and friend ratings demonstrated high levels of agreement across behavior problems presentations. Further, raters’ own behavior problems were related inconsistently to rating agreement, whereas friendship quality demonstrated some impact on the informant’s reports of specific behavior problems. Many adolescents avoid seeking psychological help despite the increasing prevalence of mental disorders. The current study investigated whether distress and stigma exhibit differential relationships to decisions to seek online mental health information among a sample of predominantly racial/ethnic minority U.S. adolescents. In this investigation, 174 adolescents (Age: M = 15.90, SD = 0.85, Range = 14−19) completed assessments of help-seeking stigma, psychological distress, and a question asking if they would like to view a website with mental health information. Distress was a statistically significant predictor of decisions to seek online mental health information, but stigma was not. Severely distressed boys …

Vibrio cholerae is a Gram-negative bacterium known as a waterborne pathogen. It is often found in marine conditions and can infect humans through ingestion. V. cholerae is responsible for cholera, a disease characterized by profuse diarrhea, vomiting, and other dehydration symptoms. Ultimately, severe cases can cause extreme electrolyte imbalances, shock, and acute renal failure which lead to death in a short period of time. Objective This study aims to assess the health and economic costs and benefits to society and patients resulting from the expansion of telemedicine into online refractive exams and to determine the likelihood of potential consumers to utilize such services. Methods A paper survey was distributed at the Inaugural Cempa Health Fair in October of 2019 to both vendors and participants. 105 responses were used to evaluate personal perceptions, practices, and likelihood across a diverse range of demographics. The United States has the highest Maternal Mortality Rate in the developed world, and it has been increasing since 1987. To combat this problem, researchers have developed Early Warning Systems (EWS) to identify when a woman is developing signs of a life-threatening problem during the maternal period. The early years of the AIDS epidemic marked a tumultuous period of American history, calling into question the authority of doctors and the ability of scientists to cure disease. Already marginalized groups, such as gay men and intravenous drug users, appeared to be most vulnerable to a deadly virus with no cure or effective treatments. In the face of discrimination, activists rose up to provide necessary services for AIDS patients and advocate on their behalf. Sexual health is an important yet often neglected component of patient care. Most research on sexual health assessment and its place in nursing occurred from the 1970s to the early 2000s, leaving a gap in understanding nurses’ current attitudes and beliefs toward assessing patients’ sexual health. Frequencies by which sexual health assessments (SHA) are performed by nurses today is also unknown. Childhood lead poisoning is an ongoing health threat despite actions taken by governmental bodies to remove lead from gasoline, paint, and other various household objects in which lead is found. In South Chattanooga specifically, lead has been found in the soil at such a level it is considered a public health threat, especially to children under the age of six. Over the last ten years, while teenage use of cigarettes has diminished, their use of electronic nicotine delivery systems (e-cigarettes) has increased. Adolescent e-cigarette use includes risks and challenges which are unique and different from adolescent use of traditional cigarettes. Many of the risks of e-cigarettes are not well known or well understood, especially by the teen population. A robust understanding of what entices adolescents and teens to use e-cigarettes is critical for schools in crafting an effective response. Parental Deployment And Healthcare Utilization In Adolescents With Migraines And Other Somatic Symptoms, Charles Zimbrick-Rogers, Ashleigh R. Drake, Anne Peruski, Samuel Stinnette, Brian Adams

Somatic symptoms in adolescents are associated with psychosocial stress. Parental military deployment can function as a stressor for adolescents. A retrospective cohort study was developed exploring relationships between health care utilization, a proxy for symptomatology, and sponsor deployment in adolescents with somatic symptoms. Data was obtained from the Military Health System Data Repository. Migraine headaches was the most common somatic symptom diagnosis. Parental deployment was overall associated with a 27% decrease in visits for somatic symptoms. For adolescents whose sponsor was female, deployment was associated with a 34% decrease in visits. This pattern is inconsistent with prior research on somatic …
