Background

Smoking is 2-3 times more common in people with mental health problems than in the general population. This has serious health implications, with rates of cancer being high and coronary heart disease and respiratory disorders commonplace.

Reducing the prevalence of smoking and tobacco-related harm is central to UK Government policy. Aim The aim of the study was to explore the tobacco and alcohol-related health promotion needs of people with mild/moderate learning disabilities.

Methodology & Methods The design of the study was grounded in the principles of the Medical Research Council’s Framework for the development and evaluation of complex healthcare interventions. Specifically, a developmental approach was adopted, where evidence was gathered and data collected and synthesised to inform the development of subsequent interventions. 1. Introduction

Smokers aged 65 years and older are a vulnerable group who are likely to have conditions that are caused or complicated by smoking. Older smokers are also likely to die prematurely, losing on average 16 years from their projected life expectancy.

In recent years a growing body of research has demonstrated that older smokers can derive significant health benefits from stopping smoking in later life, despite having smoked for many years.
