Utilizing Livers From Donors Older Than 65: A Single Center Experience, Krishnaraj Mahendraraj, Jorge H. Castro, Sean Devitt, Chad Gorn, Cataldo Doria, Adam Frank, Warren Maley, Carlo G. Ramirez

Adam M. Franks, MD

Conclusions:

Use of liver grafts from older donors presents similar survival outcomes as grafts from younger donor age. Therefore, it offers a viable option to expand the donor pool and increase number of OLTs.

However, there is higher incidence of retransplantation due to primary graft non-function, and longer hospital length of stay observed in the older donor age group.

Further studies using larger patient populations are needed to validate our results.

Silencing Of The Pink1 Gene Expression By Conditional Rnai Does Not Induce Dopaminergic Neuron Death In Mice., Hongxia Zhou, Björn H Falkenburger, Jörg B Schulz, Kim Tieu, Zuoshang Xu, Xu Gang Xia Feb 2018

Silencing Of The Pink1 Gene Expression By Conditional Rnai Does Not Induce Dopaminergic Neuron Death In Mice., Hongxia Zhou, Björn H Falkenburger, Jörg B Schulz, Kim Tieu, Zuoshang Xu, Xu Gang Xia

Transgenic RNAi, an alternative to the gene knockout approach, can induce hypomorphic phenotypes that resemble those of the gene knockout in mice. Conditional transgenic RNAi is an attractive choice of method for reverse genetics in vivo because it can achieve temporal and spatial silencing of targeted genes. Pol III promoters such as U6 are widely used to drive the expression of RNAi transgenes in animals. Tested in transgenic mice, a Cre-loxP inducible U6 promoter drove the broad expression of an shRNA against the Pink1 gene whose loss-of-functional mutations cause one form of familial Parkinson's disease. The expression of the shRNA …

High-Resolution Physical Map For Chromosome 16q12.1-Q13, The Blau Syndrome Locus., Xiaoju Wang, Helena Kuivaniemi, Gina Bonavita, Charlene J Williams, Gerard Tromp

Charlene Williams

BACKGROUND: The Blau syndrome (MIM 186580), an autosomal dominant granulomatous disease, was previously mapped to chromosome 16p12-q21. However, inconsistent physical maps of the region and consequently an unknown order of microsatellite markers, hampered us from further refining the genetic locus for the Blau syndrome. To address this problem, we constructed our own high-resolution physical map for the Blau susceptibility region. RESULTS: We generated a high-resolution physical map that provides more than 90% coverage of a refined Blau susceptibility region. The map consists of four contigs of sequence tagged site-based bacterial artificial chromosomes with a total of 124 bacterial artificial chromosomes, …

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: There is scant data regarding disease presentation and treatment response among black men living in Africa. In this study we evaluate disease presentation and early clinical outcomes among Ghanaian men with prostate cancer treated with external beam radiotherapy (EBRT). METHODS: A total of 379 men with prostate cancer were referred to the National Center for Radiotherapy, Ghana from 2003 to 2009. Data were collected regarding patient-and tumor-related factors such as age, prostate specific antigen (PSA), Gleason score (GS), clinical stage (T), and use of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). For patients who received EBRT, freedom from biochemical failure (FFbF) …

Radiation Therapy After Radical Prostatectomy For Prostate Cancer: Evaluation Of Complications And Influence Of Radiation Timing On Outcomes In A Large, Population-Based Cohort., Sarah E Hegarty, Terry Hyslop, Adam Dicker Md, Phd, Timothy Showalter Md

Sarah E Hegarty

PURPOSE: To evaluate the influence of timing of salvage and adjuvant radiation therapy on outcomes after prostatectomy for prostate cancer.

METHODS: Using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results-Medicare linked database, we identified prostate cancer patients diagnosed during 1995-2007 who had one or more adverse pathological features after prostatectomy. The final cohort of 6,137 eligible patients included men who received prostatectomy alone (n = 4,509) or with adjuvant (n = 894) or salvage (n = 734) radiation therapy. Primary outcomes were genitourinary, gastrointestinal, and erectile dysfunction events and survival after treatment(s).

RESULTS: Radiation therapy after prostatectomy was associated with higher rates …

Variability may be associated with increase morbidity and mortality in ICU patients. We analyzed glycemic variability after major surgery in diabetic (DM) and non-diabetic (NDM) patients using an automated intravenous blood glucose monitor (IVBG).
