Musculoskeletal Fitness As A Predictor Of Injury During Police Academy Training: A Retrospective Cohort Study, Rob Orr, Matthew Stewart, Rodney P. Pope, Michael Stierli, Ben Hinton

Rob Marc Orr

Introduction:

• Tactical training institutions (like those for military, law enforcement and firefighting) often implement intensive training regimes to adequately prepare their candidates (Bullock et al. 2010)

• Recruit training physical fitness assessment items are performed to determine baseline fitness of each recruit

• Previous research has investigated fitness measures as a positive injury predictor among tactical recruits during basic training (Bedno et al., 2013; Knapik et al., 2001; O’connor et al., 2011; Rosendal, et al., 2003)

• However protocols generally include aerobic fitness as part of the process with predominantly military recruit populations (Lisman, et al. 2013: Knapik et …

Training For Tactical Operations In Tropical Environments: Challenges, Risks, & Strategies For Risk Management, Rodney Pope, Rob Orr, Anthony Walker, Shane D. Irving, Ralph P. Jones, Richard J. Gorey, Scott D. Gayton, Joseph Knapik

Rob Marc Orr

Tactical operators, encompassing military, law enforcement, fire and other emergency personnel, can be found in all climatic zones. These tactical operators may be deployed at short notice to tropical environments, often with limited time to acclimatise if based in more temperate zones. They are then expected to undertake arduous tactical tasks, often repeatedly and for extended periods in the tropical area. These demands combine with harsh environments, personal protective equipment (PPE), tactical loads, threats to life, and responsibility for the safety and survival of others to place immense physical and mental stresses on tactical operators. Managing the resulting risks is …

Methods Retrospective data from an Australian State Police Force were provided for analysis (♂ n = 1155, mean (±SD) age = 31.34 ± 8.41 years: ♀ n …

Load Carriage And What It Means For Search & Rescue, Rob M. Orr, Rodney Pope Jun 2016

Load Carriage And What It Means For Search & Rescue, Rob M. Orr, Rodney Pope

Rob Marc Orr

SAR personnel may often be required to carry external loads as a task requirement. In turn these external loads may be carried in extreme environments across unpredictable terrain. In tactical occupations, like those undertaken by Defence Force, law enforcement and fire and rescue personnel, these loads, which can range from 10 to over 50kg, are known to cause a variety of injuries to the neurological and musculoskeletal systems of the carrier. In addition, these loads are known to impede task performance and in some cases have ultimately led to mission failure. To mitigate these potential risks of injury and performance …

Load Carriage: Reconditioning For The Return Top Work Of Tactical Athletes, Rob Marc Orr Apr 2015

Load Carriage: Reconditioning For The Return Top Work Of Tactical Athletes, Rob Marc Orr

Rob Marc Orr

Tactical athletes, like police officers, soldiers and fire-fighters, carry external loads as an occupational requirement. For police officers these loads can weigh up to 27 kg, fire fighters up to 37 kg, and soldiers over 50 kg (Knapik, et al., 2004; Orr, 2012). Furthermore these loads are often carried in extreme and unhospitable environments where threat to life is an occupational risk. Not only are these load weights increasing (Orr, 2010), but research suggests that once a load carriage injury has been sustained, the carrier is at a high risk of subsequent load carriage injuries (Orr, 2012) . Therefore, optimizing …

Gender Differences In Load Carriage Injuries Of Australian Army Soldiers, Rob Marc Orr Apr 2015

Gender Differences In Load Carriage Injuries Of Australian Army Soldiers, Rob Marc Orr

Rob Marc Orr

Soldiers are required to carry loads of 50+kg while performing combat tasks, often in unpredictable and hostile environments. Removal of gender restrictions in combat arms trades of military forces, combined with the changing nature of warfare, means female soldiers are more frequently exposed to heavy military load carriage. Currently female soldiers carry lighter absolute loads than male soldiers but only slightly heavier relative loads. Purpose: To determine relative risks and patterns of injuries, including serious personal injuries (SPI), associated with contemporary military load carriage in female compared to male soldiers.

The Effects Of Fluid Loss On Physical Performance: A Critical Review, Andrew Carlton, Rob Orr

Rob Marc Orr

The purpose of this review was to critically analyse the current evidence investigating the effect of an athlete's hydration status on physical performance. Discussion. The evidence suggests that dehydration has a negative impact on physical performance for activities lasting more than 30 s in duration. However, dehydration was found to have no significant impact on physical performance for activities lasting less than 15 s in duration.
