Musculoskeletal Fitness As A Predictor Of Injury During Police Academy Training: A Retrospective Cohort Study, Rob Orr, Matthew Stewart, Rodney P. Pope, Michael Stierli, Ben Hinton
Rob Marc Orr
Introduction:
• Tactical training institutions (like those for military, law enforcement and firefighting) often implement intensive training regimes to adequately prepare their candidates (Bullock et al. 2010)
• Recruit training physical fitness assessment items are performed to determine baseline fitness of each recruit
• Previous research has investigated fitness measures as a positive injury predictor among tactical recruits during basic training (Bedno et al., 2013; Knapik et al., 2001; O’connor et al., 2011; Rosendal, et al., 2003)
• However protocols generally include aerobic fitness as part of the process with predominantly military recruit populations (Lisman, et al. 2013: Knapik et …

Is A Students’ Ability To Critically Self-Reflect, Related To Their Performance On Physiotherapy Clinical Placements?, Sarah Brooks, Nikki Milne, Rob Marc Orr, Rebecca Terry
Rob Marc Orr
Background. The relationship between students’ reflective ability and performance on physiotherapy clinical placement is currently unclear.
Objectives. To investigate: i) if a relationship exists between students’ critical reflective ability and performance on physiotherapy clinical placement; and whether these relationships differ by ii) Critical reflective task (CRT) rank grade or, iii) by gender.
Design. An observational cohort study design.
Methods. Critical Reflection Task (CRT) marks and clinical placement (APP) scores from 196 (F=94; M=102) post-graduate, entry-level physiotherapy students were analyzed.
Results. A significant moderate predictive relationship was found between CRT marks and APP scores (r=.411, p2=.169, SEE=12.79). There was a weak …

Training For Tactical Operations In Tropical Environments: Challenges, Risks, & Strategies For Risk Management, Rodney Pope, Rob Orr, Anthony Walker, Shane D. Irving, Ralph P. Jones, Richard J. Gorey, Scott D. Gayton, Joseph Knapik

Tactical operators, encompassing military, law enforcement, fire and other emergency personnel, can be found in all climatic zones. These tactical operators may be deployed at short notice to tropical environments, often with limited time to acclimatise if based in more temperate zones. They are then expected to undertake arduous tactical tasks, often repeatedly and for extended periods in the tropical area. These demands combine with harsh environments, personal protective equipment (PPE), tactical loads, threats to life, and responsibility for the safety and survival of others to place immense physical and mental stresses on tactical operators. Managing the resulting risks is …
A Comparison Of Fitness Scores Between Injured And Uninjured Police Cadets., J. Jay Dawes, Robin Orr, Rodney Pope, Craig Elder
A Comparison Of Fitness Scores Between Injured And Uninjured Police Cadets., J. Jay Dawes, Robin Orr, Rodney Pope, Craig Elder
Rob Marc Orr
Purpose: The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether there were significant mean score differences on selected fitness tests between cadets who sustained an injury while attending a 27-week state patrol training academy and their uninjured counterparts. Methods: Archival data for eighty-one cadets from two 27-week state patrol training cohorts were utilized for this analysis. This data was collected as part of the agency’s normal training academy fitness assessment prior to commencement of training. The data included self-reported age (yrs); height (in) and weight (lbs); and push-up, sit-up, vertical jump and 20 meter multi-stage fitness test (20m-MSFT) scores. Injury …

A Functional Movement Screen Profile Of An Australian State Police Force: A Retrospective Cohort Study, Robin Marc Orr, Rodney Pope, Michael Stierli, Ben Hinton
Rob Marc Orr
Background Police officers are required to perform dynamic movements in unpredictable environments, the results of which can lead to injury. Early identification of poor movement patterns of a police population, and potential sub groups within this population, may provide opportunities to treat and minimise injury risks. The aim of this study was to profile the functional movement capabilities of an Australian state police force and potential sub groups through a retrospective cohort study. Methods Retrospective data from an Australian State Police Force were provided for analysis (♂ n = 1155, mean (±SD) age = 31.34 ± 8.41 years: ♀ n …
Load Carriage And What It Means For Search & Rescue, Rob M. Orr, Rodney Pope
Load Carriage And What It Means For Search & Rescue, Rob M. Orr, Rodney Pope
Rob Marc Orr
SAR personnel may often be required to carry external loads as a task requirement. In turn these external loads may be carried in extreme environments across unpredictable terrain. In tactical occupations, like those undertaken by Defence Force, law enforcement and fire and rescue personnel, these loads, which can range from 10 to over 50kg, are known to cause a variety of injuries to the neurological and musculoskeletal systems of the carrier. In addition, these loads are known to impede task performance and in some cases have ultimately led to mission failure. To mitigate these potential risks of injury and performance …

The Epidemiology Of Injuries In Australian Professional Rugby Union 2014 Super Rugby Competition, Timothy Whitehouse, Rob Orr, Edward Fitzgerald, Simon Harries, Christopher P. Mclellan
Rob Marc Orr
Background:
Rugby union is a collision-based ball sport played at the professional level internationally. Rugby union has one of the highest reported incidences of injury of all team sports.
Purpose:
To identify the characteristics, incidence, and severity of injuries occurring in Australian professional Super Rugby Union.
Design: Descriptive epidemiology study.
Methods:
The present study was a prospective epidemiology study on a cohort of 180 professional players from 5 Australian Super Rugby teams during the 2014 Super Rugby Union Tournament. Team medical staff collected and submitted daily training and match-play injury data through a secure, web-based electronic platform. The injury data …

Australian Soldier Load Carriage: From Gallipoli To Afghanistan, Rob Orr
Rob Marc Orr
Background: •From the early Assyrian spearman of antiquity (circa 800 B.C.), soldiers have been required to carry external loads consisting of weaponry, equipment and food (Orr, 2010; Knapicket al., 2012:2004) •Downstream effects of these loads have been shown to impact on the tactics of warfare, cause injury and reduce fighting force size (Lee, 2007; Breen, 2002;Lothian , 1921)

Effect Of Therapeutic Massage On Pain In Patients With Dementia, Yamini Kapoor, Rob Orr
Rob Marc Orr
Introduction
The aim was to investigate whether therapeutic massage was effective in relieving pain in elderly residents with dementia.
Methods
A randomized controlled study was conducted in an aged care facility. Ten participants with dementia or advanced dementia were allocated to an intervention group or a control group. The intervention group received 10?min of massage (effleurage, kneading, and trigger point therapy) four times per week for 4 weeks. The Pain Assessment in Advanced Dementia scale was used as the outcome measure.
Results
No significant changes in mean outcome measure scores were found post intervention (Intervention mean?=?5.0?±?3.49; Control mean?=?5.2?±?3.49: t(8)?=?0.09, p?=?0.93). …
