A 2007 projection of nursing shortages predicts that the United States shortage of registered nurses will be approximately 340,000 in 2020 and that the average age of a nurse will be 45. (Auergach, Buerhaus et al. 2007) Many healthcare facilities already have perennial openings for nurses, ultrasonographers, nuclear medicine technologists, and other hard-to fill positions.
