Comparing Work Related Injuries Between Sonographers And Occupational Therapists: A Retrospective Analysis, Kelley Osborne, Amber Robert Jan 2023

Comparing Work Related Injuries Between Sonographers And Occupational Therapists: A Retrospective Analysis, Kelley Osborne, Amber Robert

Student Research Poster Presentations 2023

Work related injuries are more prevalent in Sonographers compared to Occupational Therapists. Work-related injuries in ultrasound and occupational therapy are the result of multiple factors, including repetitive motions, heavy lifting or transfers, awkward postures, non-ergonomic work environments, and equipment. These risk factors have been identified as the main contributors to work-related injuries among Sonographers and Occupational Therapists. This research will continue the discussion of the differences and similarities between work-related injuries amongst Sonographers and Occupational Therapists, ergonomics, types of injuries, and the importance of injury prevention.

The Public's Perception Of Medical Ultrasound, Bailey Klein, Michelle Anderson Jan 2021

The Public's Perception Of Medical Ultrasound, Bailey Klein, Michelle Anderson

Student Research Poster Presentations 2021

Ultrasound (sonography) is a primary imaging modality predominantly used in the Diagnostic Radiology department to aid in the findings of internal pathological conditions. Sonography has been used for medical diagnosis since the early 1970’s; however, in comparison to other imaging modalities, it is relatively young and evolving. Since Ian Donald’s discovery in obstetrical ultrasound, there has been a significant growth in Maternal and Fetal Medicine as well as an explosion in the use of non-medical obstetrical imaging, better known as keepsake or entertainment ultrasound. Unlike all other imaging examinations, in obstetrics, family members accompany the patient for viewing where the …

Diagnostic Imaging Of Inflammatory Carcinoma Of The Breast With Mammography And Sonography, Aubrey Bullock Jan 2021

Diagnostic Imaging Of Inflammatory Carcinoma Of The Breast With Mammography And Sonography, Aubrey Bullock

Student Research Poster Presentations 2021

Inflammatory Breast Carcinoma (IBC) is a rare type of breast cancer with a high incidence of metastases that makes the breast tender, red, swollen, and sometimes exhibits an orange peel appearance. These type of cancer cells block lymph vessels in the skin of the breast and develops rapidly. Risks factors include sex, lifestyle, age, reproductive factors, race, obesity, and family history. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women. Approximately 1 in 8 women have a risk of developing breast cancer. The most accurate way to diagnose inflammatory breast carcinoma is via mammography and/or sonography. Mammography/and …

Sonography Education In Australia, Canada, And The United States, Sierra Pettit, Haley Bechdel Jan 2021

Sonography Education In Australia, Canada, And The United States, Sierra Pettit, Haley Bechdel

Student Research Poster Presentations 2021

Sonographers are healthcare professionals who perform medical diagnostic procedures that use high frequency sound waves to produce visual images of human organs, tissues, or blood flow inside the body. Sonography students must attend either secondary degree programs or postsecondary degree programs, depending on the country in which they receive their education. In this Literature Review, a comparison of the secondary and post-secondary educational process within Australia, Canada, and the United States will be discussed. An overview of the general primary and secondary educational systems are briefly described. The different accrediting and credentialing bodies are discussed in each of the three …

The Sonographic Progression Of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Into Non-Alcoholic Cirrhosis Of The Liver, Giana Tondora Jan 2020

The Sonographic Progression Of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Into Non-Alcoholic Cirrhosis Of The Liver, Giana Tondora

Student Research Poster Presentations 2020

Cirrhosis is quickly becoming a prevalent disease in the United States alone and affects 1 in every 400 Americans. Cirrhosis occurs when the liver's fibrous bands are no longer fibrous in response to the liver being scarred and no longer being able to filter toxins from the blood. Ultrasound is a key tool along with blood tests that allows cirrhosis to definitively be detected and diagnosed in patients. Cirrhosis can be either non-alcoholic or alcoholic depending on the patient’s history and there are distinct differences in appearance of the liver sonographically as well as symptoms and treatment of this disease …

Interventional Breast Imaging, Agripina Torres Jan 2020

Interventional Breast Imaging, Agripina Torres

Medical Imaging Senior Posters

Interventional breast imaging is essential in the diagnosis of abnormal findings in the breast tissue. Interventional breast imaging began as an open excision; the breast was biopsied through a surgical procedure that required the whole breast to be excised, thus allowing a sample of the breast tissue to be obtained. With this type of biopsy, the patient would have a longer recovery time, a higher cost, and, in some cases, unnecessary excisions. Image guided breast intervention, however, has led to the decline of open excisions. Biopsies performed under the guidance of an imaging modality allow breast interventions to be safe, …
