Serum Levels Of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids Are Low In Chinese Men With Metabolic Syndrome, Whereas Serum Levels Of Saturated Fatty Acids, Zinc And Magnesium Are High, Yinghua Yu, Z. Cai, Jusheng Zheng, J-Z Chen, Xu Zhang, Xu-Feng Huang, Duo Li

The purpose of this study was to examine the hypothesis that serum levels of phospholipid (PL) fatty acids (FA) and minerals are associated with the components of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in the Chinese population and the profiles of changes may differ from patients with MetS from Western countries. The levels of serum PL, FA, and minerals were examined in 201 subjects (52 with MetS and 149 healthy controls without any MetS components) in China. The saturated FA proportion in serum was significantly higher, whereas the proportion of total polyunsaturated FA (PUFA), n-3 and n-6 PUFA (22:6n-3: −16%, P = .006; …

Status Epilepticus Following Intentional Overdose Of Fluvoxamine: A Case Report With Serum Fluvoxamine Concentration, David Wood, Yadhunanthanan Rajalingam, S Greene, Phillip E. Morgan, David Gerrie, Alison Jones, Paul Dargan

Fluvoxamine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that is used in the management of depression and obsessive compulsive disorders. We report a patient with status epilepticus requiring quadruple anti-convulsant treatment following a fluvoxamine overdose. Case Report. A 25-year-old female presented with drowsiness at 12 hours following deliberate ingestion of 9.6 grams of fluvoxamine. Sixteen hours after ingestion, she developed status epilepticus that required treatment with benzodiazepines (lorazepam and midazolam), thiopentone, phenytoin and phenobarbitone. Her serum fluvoxamine concentration on presentation was 1970 μg/L (therapeutic 160–220 μg/L) and routine toxicological screening was negative for other drugs. She was discharged home after …

A Critical Evaluation Of Serum Methylmalonic Acid And Vitamin B12 For The Assessment Of Cobalt Deficiency Of Growing Lambs In New Zealand, Tini Gruner, J Sedcole, J Furlong, A Sykes

Dr Tini M Gruner

AIM: To derive reference ranges for serum methylmalonic acid (MMA) for the diagnosis of cobalt/vitamin B12-responsiveness in lambs and critique existing serum vitamin B12 reference ranges. METHODS: Individual animal data from earlier supplementation trials, involving 225 ewes, 106 suckling lambs, 301 lambs during the suckling and post-weaning periods and 414 weaned lambs, for which weight gain to supplementation was observed, were used to derive relationships between serum vitamin B12 and MMA, and liveweight gain. RESULTS: Serum MMA concentrations were rarely elevated above the norm of <2 >μmol/L when serum vitamin B12 concentrations were >375 pmol/L, and not elevated into the range …
