There is arguably no more iconic motif of rural masculinity than the cowboy. The cowboy is a persona, a stereotype, an ideology, and a style of manhood strongly associated with rurality. With origins in Mexico and the American West, cowboy imagery and identities were globalized in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century and were adopted, mutated, and subverted in contexts as different as Hawai'i, urban Japan, and remote Aboriginal Australia. This paper emerged from discussions held over a two-day symposium hosted by the University of Western Sydney and the Institute of Australian Geographers in December 2011. Drawing on contemporary themes in economic geography around postcolonial theory and a concern with the histories of the sub-discipline, the symposium sought to triangulate these discourses using Raewyn Connell's (2006, 2007a, 2007b) concept of 'Southern Theory' as a means of beginning a process of critical reflection about the types of economic geographies that are produced from and in the 'Antipodes'. This article is about a pub that is also a live music venue: the Oxford Tavern in Wollongong. It tells the story of the alternative live music scene that existed there for twenty years before the venue closed in 2010. More than this, it makes an argument for vernacular cultural histories of subcultural places within Australian cities, taking seriously the forgotten venues where marginal social groups find meaning and community. In this chapter we bring a distinctly geographical perspective to questions of urban cultural policy. We are interested in how perceptions (and concrete experiences) of city size and proximity shape the politics of urban cultural policymaking. The particular kind of urban cultural policymaking we discuss relates to the pervasive idea that cities ought to refashion their economic development policies and planning regimes to become "creative cities" (Landry 2000). This paper seeks to explore creative practice in an Australian country town, and in so doing, to unsettle market-orientated interpretations of creativity that privilege the urban. Instead of focusing on creative practice as a means to develop industries, we focus on how creativity is a means to establish a cooperative gallery space that helps to sustain a sense of self in an otherwise antithetical social and cultural context. An overtly hostile response to asylum seekers was observed in questionnaire responses provided by residents of Port Augusta, South Australia in April 2002. A social construction approach to identity and representation was used to interrogate this antagonism within its social, cultural, political and geographical contexts. Asylum seekers were constructed as 'burdensome', 'threatening' and 'illegal', and opposition to them was set within the discursive framework of a 'Self/Other' binary. Enmity towards asylum seekers was articulated concurrently with overwhelming support for the Federal Government's exclusive and deterrence-oriented asylum policies. Tumor-specific delivery of ligand-directed prodrugs can increase the therapeutic window of chemotherapeutics by maintaining efficacy whilst decreasing toxic side effects. We have previously described a series of synthetic N-alkylated isatin cytotoxins that destabilize microtubules and induce apoptosis with 10-fold greater potency than conventional anti-mitotics in vitro. Here, we report the characterization, in vitro cytotoxicity and in vivo efficacy of a lead compound, 5,7-dibromo-N-(p-hydroxymethylbenzyl)isatin (N-AI) conjugated via an esterase-labile linker (N-AIE) to two proven targeting ligands, transferrin (Tf) and plasminogen activator inhibitor type 2 (PAI-2/serpinB2). Purpose: Leptin promotes negative energy balance by suppressing energy intake (EI) and elevating energy expenditure through its central action. Central leptin resistance is a hallmark of diet-induced obesity (DIO). Oral administration of teasaponin (TS) can reduce body weight and fat mass. However, little is known if TS has benefit effect in improving central leptin sensitivity. This study investigated the effects of TS on central leptin sensitivity and leptin signalling in the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus (Arc) of DIO mice. Olanzapine is widely used to treat schizophrenia and other mental diseases. Interestingly, although increased body weight is evident throughout the course of olanzapine treatment, elevated food intake only appears in relatively shorter term. Olanzapine can modulate ghrelin levels, which may upregulate neuropeptide Y (NPY) secretion at hypothalamus. Brain-specific homeobox transcription factor (BSX) may also be involved in ghrelin-induced hyperphagia. PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of olanzapine on central NPY, BSX and plasma ghrelin levels, and their relationship to food intake. This study aimed to determine the bra–breast forces generated in women with large breasts while these women wore different levels of breast support during both upright standing and treadmill running. The mean bilateral vertical component of the bra–breast force in standing was 11.7 ± 4.6 N, whereas during treadmill running the mean unilateral bra–breast force was 8.7 ± 6.4 N and 14.7 ± 10.3 N in the high and low support conditions, respectively. The Hasanbag igneous complex is situated near Sidekan, 100 km northeast of Erbil city, Kurdistan Region, within the Iraqi Zagros suture zone. It forms part of an ophiolite-bearing terrane referred to as the "Upper Allochthon" or Gemo-Qandil Group. The Hasanbag igneous complex consists predominantly of calc-alkaline basaltic andesites to andesites cut by microgabbro and diorite dikes, which previously were interpreted as a part of the Eocene Walash volcanic group. However, 40Ar-39Ar dates on Hasanbag igneous complex kaersutite (magmatic hornblende) indicate an Albian-Cenomanian age (106-92 Ma). This reveals a previously unrecognized portion of the Late Cretaceous, Neotethyan ophiolite-arc complexes in the …

There is considerable discrepancy between what is considered evidence-based practice (EBP) and what is actually delivered in substance abuse treatment settings. The Theory of Planned Behavior (TpB) is a well-established model that may assist in better understanding clinician’s intentions to use EBPs. A total of 106 residential substance abuse workers employed by The Salvation Army participated in the current study. The workers completed an anonymous survey that assessed attitudes toward EBP and examined the constructs within the TpB. A linear regression analysis was used to predict clinicians’ intentions to use EBPs. Overall, the model accounted for 41% of the variance …

Although smoking rates among mental health/substance abusing populations are very high, the focus of treatment and research has tended to be on substances other than tobacco.A range of harm-reduction strategies is needed, including long-term nicotine maintenance, smokeless tobacco and ‘clean’ nicotine products. For those who cannot or will not quit, assistance in reducing smoking should be given.
