Abstract

Introduction/ Background – The Urology match remains highly competitive, but there is limited published data on the costs of the application process for contemporary applicants. This study aims to determine the financial burden of the Urological match and the effect it has on applicants.

Methods/ Materials – All applicants to the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) Urology Residency in the 2019 Urology match were invited to complete an anonymous, IRB approved online survey containing 16 questions on interview travel and costs, financial aid, and debt burden.

Results – Thirty-nine out of 183 (21%) applicants responded to the survey. …

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to establish and validate a nomogram for predicting brain metastasis in patients with bladder cancer (BCa) and assess various treatment modalities using a primary cohort comprising 234 patients with clinicopathologically-confirmed BCa from 2004 to 2015 in the National Cancer Database.

METHODS: Machine learning method and Cox model were used for nomogram construction. For BCa patients with brain metastasis, surgery of the primary site, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, palliative care, brain confinement of metastatic sites, and the Charlson/Deyo Score were predictive features identified for building the nomogram.

Systemic metabolic alterations associated with increased consumption of saturated fat and obesity are linked with increased risk of prostate cancer progression and mortality, but the molecular underpinnings of this association are poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate in a murine prostate cancer model, that high-fat diet (HFD) enhances the MYC transcriptional program through metabolic alterations that favour histone H4K20 hypomethylation at the promoter regions of MYC regulated genes, leading to increased cellular proliferation and tumour burden. Objective: To determine the resistance rate of penicillin and ceftriaxone amongst invasive meningitis and nonmeningitis isolates of streptococcus pneumoniae. Methods: The prospective cross-sectional study was conducted from January 2011 to March 2014 at the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory of Aga Khan University, Karachi, and comprised all invasive strains of streptococcus pneumoniae. Penicillin and ceftriaxone susceptibilities were performed and interpreted based on minimum inhibitory concentration breakpoints recommended by Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines. Data was analysed using Stata 12.

The authors' group recently reported on the important role of centromere protein F (CENPF), a protein associated with the centromere-kinetochore complex and chromosomal segregation during mitosis, in PC MRI visibility. This study focuses on discerning the role of CENPF in metabolic perturbation in human PC3 cells. Here, we use second-harmonic generation (SHG) microscopy to specifically probe the role of the proteoglycan decorin (Dcn) on collagen assembly in a wild type (wt) and Dcn null mouse (Dcn  -    /    -  ). Urinary stone disease is a highly prevalent urological condition; however, the pathophysiology remains poorly understood. Growing evidence suggests a relationship between urinary tract infections, antibiotic exposure and the development of urolithiasis. In this project, we utilized a dietary Drosophila melanogaster model and a calcium oxalate crystal adhesion assay to further investigate the impact of a urinary pathogen and antibiotics on calcium stone formation. We demonstrated that both a non-urease producing strain of Escherichia coli and the antibiotics, ciprofloxacin and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, increased calcium stone formation. BACKGROUND: Previously published results from our laboratory identified a mechano-gated two-pore domain potassium channel, TREK-1, as a main mechanosensor in the smooth muscle of the human urinary bladder. One of the limitations of in vitro experiments on isolated human detrusor included inability to evaluate in vivo effects of TREK-1 on voiding function, as the channel is also expressed in the nervous system, and may modulate micturition via neural pathways. However, in some rare instance, epididymitis/orchitis is a side effect of amiodarone. Occult papillary renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a rare disease process in which there is evidence of metastatic kidney cancer, but no primary kidney tumor can be found on physical exam or imaging. The papillary subtype of RCC accounts for 10-15% of RCC’s. These lesions infrequently present as occult disease. A Virchow’s node can be positive for multiple cancer types, most notably gastric cancer, but also gallbladder, pancreas, kidneys, testicular, and prostate cancer. The human microbiota is paramount for normal host physiology. Altered host-microbiome interactions are part of the pathogenesis of numerous common ailments. Currently, much emphasis is placed on the involvement of the microbiome in the pathogenesis of type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), impaired glucose tolerance, and other metabolic disorders (i.e. obesity). Several studies found highly significant correlations of specific intestinal bacteria with T2DM.
