A direct correlation between hamstring tightness and severity of lower back pain (LBP) has been previously reported. Hamstring contraction creates knee flexion, hip extension and posterior pelvic tilt. Posterior pelvic tilt causes the lumbar spine to flatten (hypolordosis) which places pressure on the anterior structures of the spine, including the intervertebral disc. This increased pressure may predispose individuals to disc degeneration and associated pain. For this reason, hamstring stretching is often prescribed to alleviate LBP, however, the effect of hamstring lengthening on the kinematics of the lumbar spine and pelvis is not well understood. Introduction: Low Back Pain (LBP) is a leading cause of activity limitation worldwide and results in 149 million lost work days annually in the United States. The total costs of LBP are estimated to be $100 to $200 billion annually. Specific causes of LBP account for less than 15% of LBP cases. Heavy loading of the lumbar spine and tight hamstrings have been identified as risk factors for LBP. Tight hamstrings pull the pelvis posteriorly and reduce the lordosis of the spine, resulting in increased loading of the lumbar vertebral bodies of the spine. Orthopedic and neurologic cases routinely reach noise levels exceeding 120 decibels (Katz, 2014). Modern equipment and monitors used by anesthesia personnel only reach 85 decibels (Katz, 2014). These monitors can go undetected during peak noise levels creating a serious safety concern for patients that could lead to patient injury or death (Gawande, Zinner, Studdert, & Brennan, 2003). (+)-Boldine, an aporphine alkaloid, is reported to be biologically active at various Central Nervous System(CNS) receptors. However, only a few Structure Activity Relationship(SAR) studies have been conducted using boldine’s aporphine scaffold. A library of novel analogs was synthesized from boldine to understand the effect of bisbenzylation at C2 and C9 positions on the affinity and selectivity at the serotonin receptors.

The introduction of nanoformulated antiretroviral therapeutic regimens is a promising alternative to standard once a day oral treatment of HIV infection. Our lab has pioneered this effort and was successful in harnessing mononuclear phagocytes (monocytes, dendritic cells and macrophages) as nanoformulated drug carriers. The approach was developed as Trojan horses for drug transport, delivery and distribution to sites of viral replication in order to facilitate microbial elimination in HIV sanctuaries. Cisplatin (cis-Pt), an anticancer platinum (Pt) drug, is used widely in the treatment of several malignancies, such as ovarian cancer. This Pt compound induces DNA damage, which results in p53 activation through post-translational modifications, mainly phosphorylation, culminating in execution of programmed cell-death. However, despite initial therapeutic response to cis-Pt, clinical resistance to this drug emerges leading to disease progression. Newland Elementary has an exceptional Special Needs program that teaches the children with the most severe cases of autism in its school district. A growing body of research suggests that dopaminergic cell death seen in Parkinson’s disease is caused by mitochondrial dysfunction. Oxidative stress, with subsequent generation of reactive oxygen species, is the hallmark biochemical product of mitochondrial dysfunction. The ketogenic diet has been found to enhance mitochondrial energy production, protect against reactive oxygen species-generated cell death, and increase adenosine, a purine that modulates dopamine activity. The current study evaluates the effects of a long-term (5-month) ketogenic diet on behavioral, neurochemical, and neuroanatomical measures in PINK1-KO rats, a new animal model of Parkinson’s disease. Aerobic vaginitis (AV) is a more recently defined infection that involves aerobic pathogenic bacteria that replace the normal flora of the vaginal tract. It is commonly mistaken for other vaginal infections, such as bacterial vaginosis (BV), because they share many common symptoms. AV leads to complications during pregnancy, such as premature delivery and amnion infection, and is diagnosed by indications that range from vaginal discharge to inflammation. Study Design: Systematic review of 3 English language primary studies, published between 2013-2014.

Data Sources: Three randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published on/after 2013 comparing the use of hypnotherapy to alternative methods in the treatment of smoking cessation. Bisphosphonates (BPs) are used for the treatment of osteoporosis. This study evaluated changes in bone microdamage with BP treatment duration. Fifty-one iliac crest biopsies were obtained from Caucasian women, ages 41 to 87 years, who were previously diagnosed and treated for osteoporosis with oral BPs for 1-16 years duration. Patients diagnosed with any disease, drug, or substance abuse that may affect bone metabolism were excluded.

This study assesses the immediate effectiveness of therapeutic taping on musculoskeletal pain. Objective: Evaluate the immediate effects of three therapeutic taping interventions on musculoskeletal pain. Design: Experimental, single-group repeated measures design. Participants: 29 physically active volunteers (14 male, 15 female) with a mean age of 20.9 ± 1.98. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a 10-week THR intervention on balance and task-specific self-efficacy in children with developmental disabilities.
