The Effect Of Hamstring Lengthening On Pelvic Tilt And Lumbar Lordosis, Michael Scott Braman
The Effect Of Hamstring Lengthening On Pelvic Tilt And Lumbar Lordosis, Michael Scott Braman
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
A direct correlation between hamstring tightness and severity of lower back pain (LBP) has been previously reported. Hamstring contraction creates knee flexion, hip extension and posterior pelvic tilt. Posterior pelvic tilt causes the lumbar spine to flatten (hypolordosis) which places pressure on the anterior structures of the spine, including the intervertebral disc. This increased pressure may predispose individuals to disc degeneration and associated pain. For this reason, hamstring stretching is often prescribed to alleviate LBP, however, the effect of hamstring lengthening on the kinematics of the lumbar spine and pelvis is not well understood. Accurate measurement of lumbar spine movement …
A Subject Specific Surface Electromyography Model For Estimating L4/L5 Compressive Loading, Pablo Joaquin Dopico
A Subject Specific Surface Electromyography Model For Estimating L4/L5 Compressive Loading, Pablo Joaquin Dopico
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Introduction: Low Back Pain (LBP) is a leading cause of activity limitation worldwide and results in 149 million lost work days annually in the United States. The total costs of LBP are estimated to be $100 to $200 billion annually. Specific causes of LBP account for less than 15% of LBP cases. Heavy loading of the lumbar spine and tight hamstrings have been identified as risk factors for LBP. Tight hamstrings pull the pelvis posteriorly and reduce the lordosis of the spine, resulting in increased loading of the lumbar vertebral bodies of the spine. While this mechanism has been described, …
Noise: Its Impact In The Operating Room, Brennon Wesley Sloan
Noise: Its Impact In The Operating Room, Brennon Wesley Sloan
Doctoral Projects
Orthopedic and neurologic cases routinely reach noise levels exceeding 120 decibels (Katz, 2014). Modern equipment and monitors used by anesthesia personnel only reach 85 decibels (Katz, 2014). These monitors can go undetected during peak noise levels creating a serious safety concern for patients that could lead to patient injury or death (Gawande, Zinner, Studdert, & Brennan, 2003). A clinical question was developed to determine if the education of noise levels in the operating room affects change in practice. For operating room managers and staff, does education of noise levels in the operating room compared to no education initiate a change …

Synthetic And Biological Exploration Of (+)-Boldine - Identification Of Potential Cns Receptor Ligands, Sujay Joseph
Theses and Dissertations
(+)-Boldine, an aporphine alkaloid, is reported to be biologically active at various Central Nervous System(CNS) receptors. However, only a few Structure Activity Relationship(SAR) studies have been conducted using boldine’s aporphine scaffold. A library of novel analogs was synthesized from boldine to understand the effect of bisbenzylation at C2 and C9 positions on the affinity and selectivity at the serotonin receptors.
Long-Acting Antiretroviral Nanoformulation Development And Subcellular Trafficking, Dongwei Guo
Long-Acting Antiretroviral Nanoformulation Development And Subcellular Trafficking, Dongwei Guo
Theses & Dissertations
The introduction of nanoformulated antiretroviral therapeutic regimens is a promising alternative to standard once a day oral treatment of HIV infection. Our lab has pioneered this effort and was successful in harnessing mononuclear phagocytes (monocytes, dendritic cells and macrophages) as nanoformulated drug carriers. The approach was developed as Trojan horses for drug transport, delivery and distribution to sites of viral replication in order to facilitate microbial elimination in HIV sanctuaries. However, the remaining challenges for current antiretroviral nanoformulations include to formulate a broad range of hydrophilic short-acting drugs, and to elucidate the mechanism of sequestered nanoparticles in macrophages at the …

Abstract
CIRCUMVENTING CISPLATIN RESISTANCE IN OVARIAN CANCERS THROUGH REACTIVATION OF P53 BY NON-CROSS-RESISTANT PLATINUM ANALOGS
Michelle Martinez-Rivera, B.S.
Advisory Professor: Zahid H. Siddik, Ph.D.
Cisplatin (cis-Pt), an anticancer platinum (Pt) drug, is used widely in the treatment of several malignancies, such as ovarian cancer. This Pt compound induces DNA damage, which results in p53 activation through post-translational modifications, mainly phosphorylation, culminating in execution of programmed cell-death. However, despite initial therapeutic response to cis-Pt, clinical resistance to this drug emerges leading to disease progression. Pt-resistance phenotypes have been associated with dysfunction in the p53 signaling pathway. Therefore, an effort to understand …

This report discusses the development of a Portable Sensory Room to be used at Newland Elementary School in Huntington Beach. Newland Elementary has an exceptional Special Needs program that teaches the children with the most severe cases of autism in its school district. People with autism typically also have sensory processing disorders, which can be extremely disruptive for a child’s development and can make it difficult for a child to be able to concentrate long enough to gain necessary life skills. The idea behind a Sensory Rooms is to create a place to calm the students and to expose them …
An Initial Analysis Of A Long-Term Ketogenic Diet’S Impact On Motor Behavior, Brain Purine Systems, And Nigral Dopamine Neurons In A New Genetic Rodent Model Of Parkinson’S Disease, Jacob Rubin, William H. Church
Church
Senior Theses and Projects
A growing body of research suggests that dopaminergic cell death seen in Parkinson’s disease is caused by mitochondrial dysfunction. Oxidative stress, with subsequent generation of reactive oxygen species, is the hallmark biochemical product of mitochondrial dysfunction. The ketogenic diet has been found to enhance mitochondrial energy production, protect against reactive oxygen species-generated cell death, and increase adenosine, a purine that modulates dopamine activity. The current study evaluates the effects of a long-term (5-month) ketogenic diet on behavioral, neurochemical, and neuroanatomical measures in PINK1-KO rats, a new animal model of Parkinson’s disease. Both wild-type and PINK1-KO animals fed a ketogenic diet …

Characterization Of Bacterial Pathogens Involved In Aerobic Vaginitis: Prevalence, Strain Characterization And Sequelae, Leslie A. Lafferty
Characterization Of Bacterial Pathogens Involved In Aerobic Vaginitis: Prevalence, Strain Characterization And Sequelae, Leslie A. Lafferty
Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences Theses and Dissertations
Aerobic vaginitis (AV) is a more recently defined infection that involves aerobic pathogenic bacteria that replace the normal flora of the vaginal tract. It is commonly mistaken for other vaginal infections, such as bacterial vaginosis (BV), because they share many common symptoms. AV leads to complications during pregnancy, such as premature delivery and amnion infection, and is diagnosed by indications that range from vaginal discharge to inflammation. Because this infection is difficult to diagnose differentially from other vaginal infections, it is important to determine what pathogens are involved in AV so that we may have the ability to detect them. …

An Analysis Of Women’S Access To Acute Opioid Detoxification Services In Maine: Identifying The Barriers To Treatment, Karen E. Conley
Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations
The lack of treatment facilities and services for opioid use disorder in Maine, combined with an increased prevalence of addiction, creates a potential for health inequity between men and women that may be intensified by barriers in access to care. This capstone study utilized detoxification screening inquiry forms and data obtained from the Milestone Foundation’s acute opioid detoxification program to assess and categorize barriers to access by gender. A barriers model was developed based on existing literature and was to identify potential associations among and between the known barriers to accessing treatment. Barriers were described as internally or externally based, …
