INTRODUCTION: As a part of a priority-setting stakeholder engagement project to strengthen the impact of the federal Tobacco 21 (T21) law, we conducted a qualitative study to solicit input from a nationwide sample of tobacco control stakeholders regarding the implementation, enforcement, and equity implications of the T21 law.

METHODS: Following the T21 policy evaluation guidance developed by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), we identified T21 experts in four domains: policy, evaluation, subject matter, and implementation from a national search of stakeholders (invitations, n=1279) to account for geographical variation. This study presents results from five focus groups conducted in December …

Marshall Journal of Medicine

Introduction

West Virginia leads the nation in substance abuse deaths per capita. This epidemic has given rise to a novel population of high-risk, obstetric patients with opiate abuse. Appropriate education, counseling, and implementation of contraception are of extreme importance among this population, due to the risks of unintended pregnancy.

Methods

This study was a retrospective chart review to determine compliance and uptake of contraceptive methods by patients in a maternal buprenorphine maintenance program prior to and following implementation of standardized contraception education and Medicaid coverage of immediate postpartum long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARC). Rates of planned contraception and rates of actual …

The Effects Of Motivational Interviewing For Those Afflicted With Opioid Addiction, Kathy Roberts

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

Substance use disorders are a worldwide problem, according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) there were 70,237 drug overdose deaths that occurred in the United States in 2017, of which 47,600 were opioid related. Illinois had a 14.3% increase of opioid deaths from 2016-2017 (CDC, 2017). Numerous interventions exist to address this health concern, yet evidence shows that Motivational Interviewing (MI) was the most efficient and effective way to promote behavioral change. The purpose of this EBP project was to provide evidence that MI increased referrals and promoted compliance with appointments to treatment programs. The sample for this project …

INTRODUCTION Interactive Voice Response (IVR) technology has become an increasingly popular and valid method for collecting Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) data on a variety of health-risk behaviors, including daily alcohol use and cigarette smoking, and for stimulating behavior change. However, very little research has evaluated the parameters of IVR compliance and reactivity in respondents who may have greater problem severity than samples previously examined in published IVR studies. This study examined the prevalence and correlates of use, receptivity and reactivity to IVR monitoring in 77 untreated risky drinking smokers who were motivated to quit within the next 6 months.

Bleach cleansing of injection equipment has been recommended to reduce the risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission associated with the reuse of injection equipment by injecting drug users (IDUs). We evaluated the recall and performance of the most commonly recommended bleach cleansing procedure of two complete fillings of the syringe with bleach, followed by two complete fillings with rinse water, and not putting used bleach and water back into source containers. IDUs were taught this procedure on enrollment in an HIV prevention demonstration project in Dade County, Florida. During follow-up session 6-12 months after initial training, the knowledge and …
