Background: Symptom burden remains a critical concern for individuals with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) following the completion of treatment. The most common symptom clusters, dyspnea (shortness of breath) and fatigue, can contribute to physical decline, reductions in quality of life, and a higher risk of comorbidities and mortality. Dyspnea is a primary limiter of exercise capacity in individuals with lung cancer, resulting in exercise avoidance and an accelerated physical decline. As such, designing resistance training with cluster sets to mitigate symptoms of dyspnea and fatigue may result in improved exercise tolerance. Thus, maintaining the exercise stimulus via cluster sets, …

The Effect Of Sleep Quality On Profile Of Mood, Physiological Responses, And Athletic Performance, Sarah Nash, Matthew Fowler, Bulent Sokmen
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
While the extent of an athlete’s physiological adaptations varies due to a range of external factors, sleep deprivation has been proven to negatively affect one’s training and, ultimately, one’s overall athletic success. Sleep deprivation, either for a short or prolonged period of time, also leads to adverse psychological effects, as measured by the alteration of genes in the brain. PURPOSE: This study investigates how both normal sleep and sleep deprivation affect an athlete’s recovery, overall skeletal muscle performance, and mental state. METHODS: Using a randomized-crossover design, 7 healthy individuals, 3 males and 4 females, with at least 1 …

Acute Effects Of Match Play Induced Fatigue On Jump Performance In Collegiate Women's Volleyball, Grayson Flora
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated changes in maximal jump performance in response to match play induced fatigue. During six sets of tournament match play, seven National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics women’s volleyball athletes accumulated a mean Player Load of 758.6±216.89 au (measured via microsensor accelerometry), and mean session rate of perceived exertion of 1184.1±363.2. Repeated measures ANOVAs were used to identify change with Hedge’s g effect sizes used to assess magnitude of change. Short recovery stress scale results indicated elevated stress (ES=1.401 to 1.588) and decreased recovery (ES = -1.358 to -1.848) 24 hours post-match, trending towards baseline 48 hours post-match. Countermovement …

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Background: The aim was to study changes in the sensitivity of CRS responses of skilled athletes caused by fatigue during a strenuous physical load. Material/Methods: Response sensitivity to hypoxic and hypercapnic stimuli was analyzed in a group of high performance rowers (n=12) aged 18-22 years during exercising on “Concept-II” rowing ergometer. Two types of loads were used: sustained intensive load at high oxygen consumption (78-83% of VO2max) and relatively easier load (49-62% of VO2max) performed within 5 minutes. The method of rebreathing was used to determine responses sensitivity to СО2. Results: The results showed an increase in respiratory response sensitivity …

Motor Units (MU) are systematically activated from increasing size in accordance to the size principle. As muscle fatigue sets in, MU firing rate increases in response to sustaining whole-body force production during a low-loaded sustained contraction with respect to MU size and MU interspike intervals (ISI). PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to compare the motor unit firing behaviors during low-force isometric fatiguing contractions. Methods: Following 3 MVCs, eight lower-body resistance trained males (23.38 ± 2.88 yrs.; 178.38 ± 7.85 cm; 86.10 ± 11.88 kg) performed 60 second submaximal (30% MVC) isometric ramp contraction of the knee extension …

Modulation of force production required during exercise is regulated from various mechanisms in the central and peripheral nervous system. Fatigue is influenced by various mechanics that may hinder the ability to continuously sustain force production. The neural activation patterns of these systems can be recorded as electrical impulses using several non-invasive techniques. The ability to examine these during fatiguing exercise has provided further insight into activation patterns in the central nervous system (i.e., motor and pre-motor cortex) during sustained muscle contractions. Electroencephalography (EEG) has been recently utilized to examine changes associated with central fatigue, but limited advancements in technology for …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Rehabilitation from injuries impairing the neuromuscular system is often difficult to quantify due to task specificity of the affected or immobilized limb or limbs. Often, exercise regimens with clinical practitioners are designed to progress motor performance to a capacity that reflects muscle force production to pre-injury capacity. Modulation of force production from these tasks are regulated from various mechanism in the central and peripheral nervous system. The neural activation of these systems can be recorded as electrical impulses using several non-invasive techniques. Recently, the ability to examine these during fatiguing exercise has provided further insight into activation patterns and firing …

Ionotropic inputs to motoneurones have the capacity to depolarise and hyperpolarise the motoneurone, whereas neuromodulatory inputs control the state of excitability of the motoneurone. Intracellular recordings of motoneurones from in vitro and in situ animal preparations have provided extraordinary insight into the mechanisms that underpin how neuromodulators regulate neuronal excitability. However, far fewer studies have attempted to translate the findings from cellular and molecular studies into a human model. In this review, we focus on the role that serotonin (5-HT) plays in muscle activation in humans. 5-HT is a potent regulator of neuronal firing rates, which can influence the force …
