Compression and cold therapy used separately have shown to reduce negative effects of tissue damage. The combining compression and cold therapy (cryocompression) as a single recovery modality has yet to be fully examined. To examine the effects of cryocompression on recovery following a bout of heavy resistance exercise, recreationally resistance trained men (n =16) were recruited, matched, and randomly assigned to either a cryocompression group (CRC) or control group (CON). Testing was performed before and then immediately after exercise, 60 minutes, 24 hours, and 48 hours after a heavy resistance exercise workout (barbell back squats for 4 sets of 6 …
The Effect Of Loaded Backpack Usage On Balance After A Functional Daily Stair Task, Shanni Moorse, Alyssa Haus, Seth A. Paradis
The Effect Of Loaded Backpack Usage On Balance After A Functional Daily Stair Task, Shanni Moorse, Alyssa Haus, Seth A. Paradis
Human Kinetics & Applied Health Sciences Student Works
Backpack usage is common among many age groups, including college students. As students go about their daily routines, they may reach cardiorespiratory fatigue (CRF). CRF achieved via a treadmill workout has been shown to significantly increase body sway during balance tasks compared to pre- fatigue values. Additionally, it has been shown that increasing backpack loads decreases balance ability. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to combine these two ideas to assess the effect of loaded backpack usage on balance by quantitatively measuring balance after a functional daily stair task (FDST) designed to resemble CRF. METHODS: 7 male and 13 …
The Manipulation Of Pace Within Endurance Sport, Sabrina Skorski, Chris Abbiss
The Manipulation Of Pace Within Endurance Sport, Sabrina Skorski, Chris Abbiss
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
In any athletic event, the ability to appropriately distribute energy is essential to prevent premature fatigue prior to the completion of the event. In sport science literature this is termed “pacing.” Within the past decade, research aiming to better understand the underlying mechanisms influencing the selection of an athlete’s pacing during exercise has dramatically increased. It is suggested that pacing is a combination of anticipation, knowledge of the end-point, prior experience and sensory feedback. In order to better understand the role each of these factors have in the regulation of pace, studies have often manipulated various conditions known to influence …
The Effects Of Flexor Pronator Mass Fatigue On Medial Elbow Stability, Nathaniel Harvey Millard
The Effects Of Flexor Pronator Mass Fatigue On Medial Elbow Stability, Nathaniel Harvey Millard
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Introduction: The medial elbow is supported from valgus loading with the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL), the flexor pronator mass (FPM), and the radial head. Fatigue of muscle can lead to a decrease in force production. The decrease in force production can lead to a decrease in joint stability. This study tested the effect of fatigue of the FPM muscles on the width of the medial joint space.
Methods: Thirty-one participants volunteered for this study (18 female and 12 male, 1 excluded; mean height 170.2±10.1 cm, mean weight 71.2±15.6 kg, mean age 21.53±1.87 years old). Ultrasound images of the width of …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Background
Physical exercise mitigates fatigue during androgen deprivation therapy (ADT); however, the effects of different exercise prescriptions are unknown.
Objectives
To determine the long-term effects of different exercise modes on fatigue in prostate cancer patients undergoing ADT.
Design, setting, and participants
Between 2009 and 2012, 163 prostate cancer patients aged 43–90 y on ADT were randomised to exercise targeting the musculoskeletal system (impact loading + resistance training; ILRT; n = 58), the cardiovascular and muscular systems (aerobic + resistance training; ART; n = 54), or to usual care/delayed exercise (DEL; n = 51) for 12 mo across university-affiliated exercise clinics …
