Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the effect a dynamic arm stabilizer had on varus elbow torque, arm speed, and throw velocity during baseball throwing. Methods: 8 collegiate baseball players (age= 20 ± 1 years, height= 183.5 ± 6.5 cm, weight= 85.6 ± 7.7 kg) participated in this study. Participants were randomly assigned to throw their first set of 25 throws at 90 feet wearing a dynamic arm stabilizer or throw their second set of 25 throws at 90 feet not wearing a dynamic arm stabilizer. After completing the first set of throws, the participants threw a …

Student Athletic Therapists' Knowledge Of Pain-Relieving Medications: A Nationwide Study, Jackie Vandertuin, Dalya Abdulla, Stephanie Lowther, Joshua Collins
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: Misuse of pain-relieving medications (PRMs), including opioids, is high among injured athletes. Athletes are increasingly relying on PRMs and as a result, it is likely that student athletic therapists (SATs) have managed athletes who have misused PRMs and may have potentially missed important symptoms placing athletes in harm. While dispensing PRMs is not within the scope of practice of the SAT, recognition and referral are. Previous research has found that SATs feel ill prepared to recognize PRM misuse and feel tremendous pressure to provide correct health information to the athlete. The purpose of this study was to expand on …

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: Complementary and integrative health (CIH) is common among patients in the U.S. and is a useful tool for athletic trainers to provide holistic treatment. There is currently minimal literature regarding athletic trainers’ experiences and outcomes of using CIH modalities for patient treatments. The purpose of this project was to explore the experiences and outcomes of collegiate athletic trainers using CIH modalities. Methods: This study used qualitative semi-structured interviews, analyzed by phenomenological approach, using consensual qualitative research analysis. Trustworthiness and credibility of the consensus codebook were established by member checking, multi-analyst triangulation, and auditing. Fourteen athletic trainers (7 females, 7 …

Rate And Magnitude Of Muscle Temperature Increase With Cycling At Various Intensities, Jennifer Ostrowski, James Scifers
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: Anecdotally, athletic training clinicians often have patients "warm up" on a stationary cycle prior to rehabilitation. No previous studies have evaluated the rate or magnitude of muscle temperature increase during a cycling task. Our objective was to determine the rate and magnitude of muscle temperature increase in superficial (2cm) and deep (4cm) muscle during cycling at various intensities. Methods: Randomized, counter-balanced crossover trial conducted at a University research laboratory. Sixteen healthy participants (male=7, female=9; mean age 26±4 years; height 170±10 cm; weight 77±8 kg; adipose thickness 1.4±0.9 cm; muscle thickness 5.1±0.7 cm). Participants performed cycling under 3 intensity conditions: …

Athletic Trainers Value The Intrinsic Rewards Of Specialty Certifications More Than Barriers And Extrinsic Rewards, Michael B. Hudson, Eva M. Frank, Taylor Harper, Lyndsey Comer, Kelsey Lamont
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: Health care professionals may earn specialty certifications to recognize their advanced knowledge and skills. Athletic training has implemented specialties; however, it is unclear what athletic trainers (ATs) know and perceive about specialty certifications. We developed a survey to examine the following issues: (1) analyze what ATs know about specialty certifications; (2) rank the rewards and barriers ATs perceive to be associated with earning/pursuing specialty certifications; and (3) examine differences in these findings based on ATs state practice acts being more restrictive or less restrictive. Method: We utilized a nonequivalent group, cross-sectional survey design and collected data for one month …

ABSTRACT
Purpose: The athletic training education landscape is shifting, which has opened new avenues for postprofessional education. Previous literature has investigated stakeholder perceptions and attitudes towards hiring a DAT degree holder in academia. Yet, there is no research investigating the experiences of DAT degree holders in academic roles. The purpose of this study was to explore the preparation and experiences of DAT degree holders related to their roles in academia. Methods: We used a consensual qualitative research design to explore the lived experiences of DAT degree holders in academia through semi-structured web-based interviews. Twelve DAT degree holders with at least …

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Objectives: Symptomatic os vesalianum pedis (OVP), a small accessory bone located adjacent to the base of the 5th metatarsal of the foot, rarely affects individuals who participate in sports. The condition typically is treated with surgical intervention. This case report documents the examination, evaluation, and treatment approach for a professional soccer player treated conservatively with a symptomatic OVP. Methods: A nineteen-year-old professional soccer player presented with pain to the base of the left 5th metatarsal. Physical examination and imaging resulted in a diagnosis of a symptomatic OVP. The player underwent a 5-stage criterion-based rehabilitation program. Results: The player …

Purpose: The rise of sport specialization can jeopardize the opportunities for families of low socioeconomic status (SES) to participate in organized sport. However, obtaining an athletic scholarship may be a motivating factor for low SES youth to sport specialize. Yet, the experiences of low SES athletes in sport participation are not well known. Method: We used an Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) to explore experiences of low SES families with children participating in sport and how this may be impacted by the current youth sport culture that promotes sport specialization. We engaged in semi-structured interviews with 12 low SES parents. Results: …
