Hegemonic Knowledge Structures In Mesh: Implications For Medical Librarianship, Stacy Brody, Erin Anthony, Emily Drabinski Oct 2021

Hegemonic Knowledge Structures In Mesh: Implications For Medical Librarianship, Stacy Brody, Erin Anthony, Emily Drabinski

Himmelfarb Library Faculty Posters and Presentations

Objective

Controlled vocabularies are necessary for clinical research and clinical practice. When medical librarians use the same language to describe the same phenomena, scientific knowledge advances and best practices can be developed. MeSH is never objective. These headings always reflect some ways of understanding the world and exclude others. This project attempts to understand how bias is embedded in the controlled terms that structure medical knowledge and implications for medical librarians.

Methods

The project team analyzes exemplar headings related to race and ethnicity and gender and sexuality to understand and reflect on the problem of hegemonic knowledge structures in MeSH. …

Library Involvement In Health Informatics Education For Health Professions Students And Practitioners: A Scoping Review., Deborah L Lauseng, Kristine M Alpi, Brenda M Linares, Elaine Sullo, Megan Von Isenburg

Himmelfarb Library Faculty Publications

Objective: The purpose of this scoping review is to evaluate the extent of library or librarian involvement in informatics education in the health domain.

Methods: We searched eight databases from their inception to 2019 for reports of informatics educational activities for health professionals or health professions students that involved library staff or resources. Two reviewers independently screened all titles/abstracts (n=2,196) and resolved inclusion decisions by consensus. From the full text of the 36 papers that met the inclusion criteria, we extracted data on 41 educational activities.

Results: The most frequent coded purposes of activities were "teaching clinical tools" (n=19, 46.3%) …

Medicare Support For Dental And Podiatry Graduate Medical Education Programs., Candice Chen, Yoonkyung Chung, Geoffrey Broadbent, Elizabeth Mertz

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

Importance: Oral health care faces ongoing workforce challenges that affect patient access and outcomes. While the Medicare program provides an estimated $14.6 billion annually in graduate medical education (GME) payments to teaching hospitals, including explicit support for dental and podiatry programs, little is known about the level or distribution of this public investment in the oral health and podiatry workforce.

Objective: To examine Medicare GME payments to teaching hospitals for dental and podiatry residents from 1998 to 2018, as well as the distribution of federal support among states, territories, and the District of Columbia.

Design, Setting, and Participants: This cross-sectional …

Critical Data Literacy: Addressing Race As A Variable In A Preclinical Medical Education Session, Stacy Brody, Susan Koenig Apr 2021

Critical Data Literacy: Addressing Race As A Variable In A Preclinical Medical Education Session, Stacy Brody, Susan Koenig

Himmelfarb Library Faculty Posters and Presentations

At the Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library, librarians conduct instruction sessions on various aspects of evidencebased medicine for first- and second-year medical students. One of these sessions, the Chest Pain Formative Observed Simulated Clinical Experience (FOSCE), introduces the Framingham Study, later cohort studies, and the Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease (ASCVD) Risk Calculator to first-year medical students. This calculator includes race as an input and over or underestimates risk for certain groups. This session previously mentioned the need to diversify study populations and described the evolution of the algorithm, but it did not highlight these as critical issues for discussion. Beyond noting this …

Highlighting Faculty Research: The Researcher Profile Audit Service From The Himmelfarb Library At The George Washington University, Sara Hoover, Tom Harrod

Himmelfarb Library Faculty Posters and Presentations

Researcher profile systems are web-based tools which attempt to capture the scholarly output of a researcher. Some tools such as Google Scholar profiles and ORCiDs are opt-in systems that researchers must actively create and cultivate. Others such as the Scopus author profile are algorithmically generated and must be claimed by an author and checked for accuracy.

These profiles continue to grow in importance as a way for fellow researchers, potential employers, and possible collaborators to learn about a researcher’s scholarship. Therefore, it’s important for researchers to maintain these profiles and to ensure that they are accurate and complete.

In order …

Bridging Readership: Using An Institutional Repository (Ir) To Promote Covid-19 Related Faculty Research, Sara Hoover, Brittany Smith Feb 2021

Bridging Readership: Using An Institutional Repository (Ir) To Promote Covid-19 Related Faculty Research, Sara Hoover, Brittany Smith

Himmelfarb Library Faculty Posters and Presentations

How can medical librarians utilize emerging technologies to promote readership of Covid-19 related research from their institution?

This poster shows how librarians and staff at the Himmelfarb Library at George Washington University (GW) used the Digital Commons institutional repository (IR) platform to develop a subject-specific collection designed to collocate and promote COVID-19-related faculty research. In June 2020, we established a collection entitled “COVID-19 Publications by GW Authors” and since that time we have archived citations to over 100 publications. By utilizing a Google-indexed IR, we have increased awareness of local scholarship and utilize the built-in PlumX dashboard to provide authors …

Consider Health Sciences Librarianship, Stacy Brody, Sara Hoover, Brian Mcdonald

Himmelfarb Library Faculty Posters and Presentations

2020 saw a dramatic rise in interest in publications associated with the health sciences, medical research, and consumer health information. With this growth came an increased awareness of the roles of information professionals. Health sciences librarians support medical professionals in providing care, researchers in advancing knowledge, faculty and students in furthering their education, and consumers in meeting their personal information needs.

This poster aims to provide the insider perspective on the skills needed to succeed as a health sciences librarian - and they might not be what you expect! The authors also describe the unique benefits and opportunities of health …

Health Policy and Management Issue Briefs

This report from the study, Strengthening Missouri’s Capacity to Respond to Public Health Crises, summarizes key findings that are relevant to strengthening the state’s and local public health agencies’ (LPHAs) capacity to respond to future public health crises. With funding from Missouri Foundation for Health, a George Washington University study team conducted 138 stakeholder interviews within public health and other sectors involved in the COVID-19 response, revealing several key opportunities for the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS). Missouri, like many other states, faced great challenges in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. Missouri now has a singular opportunity …

Advancing And Promoting Community Health: Opportunities For Accountable Communities For Health And Community Health Centers, Helen Mittmann, Jeffrey Levi, Janet Heinrich, Feygele Jacobs, Rebecca Morris, Peter Shin

Geiger Gibson/RCHN Community Health Foundation Research Collaborative

Executive Summary:

Accountable Communities for Health (ACHs) are multi -sector, community-based partnerships that aim to address community health and social needs, and Community Health Centers (CHCs) provide important community-based healthcare services for underserved and medically vulnerable populations. Given the critical role that both ACHs and CHCs play in addressing health-related social needs and social determinants of health, a survey of ACHs on CHC engagement was conducted to better understand opportunities and challenges for CHC participation in ACHs. This survey, along with follow-up conversations with ACH and CHC representatives, confirmed that ACHs and CHCs are natural partners in the effort to …
