External ankle supports, such as athletic tape and braces, used prophylactically and postinjury, have enabled athletes to participate, when their absence would have either limited participation or possibly allowed an injury. These supports offer an extrinsic mechanical source of support for the ankle. The ankle, however, is also dependent on the proprioception system, including visual input, to maintain balance through motor involvement of regional ankle musculature. It would appear that the addition of external support would enhance the overall integrity of the ankle; however, does that support exert an influence, positive or negative, on the proprioception system at the joint? …

Manual Therapy Technique For Treating An Acute Lateral Ankle Sprain In A Female Athlete, Steven Wynia Jan 2007

Manual Therapy Technique For Treating An Acute Lateral Ankle Sprain In A Female Athlete, Steven Wynia

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Background and Purpose: Lateral ankle sprains are a very prevalent sports injury resulting in missed practice and competition. Several studies have shown manual therapy techniques to be effective in restoring normal active range of motion (AROM) and expediting return to activity compared to more traditional treatment approaches such as protection, rest, ice, compression, and elevation (PRICE). This article describes a unique manual therapy approach to treating an acute ankle sprain in an athlete.

Case Description: The patient is a 16 year-old female with an acute lateral ankle sprain. This article describes a physical therapy episode of care involving an aggressive …

Ankle taping is a common practice used to support the ankle joint after injury when engaging in activities. Balance is a crucial component of athletic performance that relies on input from the vestibular, somatosensory, and visual systems. Proprioception plays a role in the somatosensory portion of balance and postural control. Ankle taping, which is used to improve performance, may alter a person's proprioception, balance, and postural control.

The purpose of this study is to determine if ankle taping has an effect on postural control in an individual free of chronic or acute ankle dysfunction. Thirty-two subjects were tested on a …
