Purpose. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore first year doctor of physical therapy student emotions when completing a first-person illness narrative assignment within a required Whole Person Care course early in curricula. Method: First-year physical therapy students from one physical therapy program completed an illness narrative assignment of a known individual with an illness experience using a first-person perspective. Qualitative data from students’ reflections from the open-ended prompt “How did you feel when writing the illness narrative?” were analyzed and coded retrospectively. Results: Diverse emotions organically emerged from the qualitative data. Coded emotions correlated with 13 of …

Dynamic Adaptations: Assessing The Integration Of Standardized Patients In Physical Therapist Assistant Education, Pamela Pologruto, Jennifer Jewell, Laura Cruz
Health Professions Education
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the use of standardized patients in the physical therapist assistant (PTA) curriculum as compared to paper-based case studies with regard to reaching higher order thinking in preparation for the clinical environment. Methods: Thirty-five participants were divided into 2 groups to participate in a discussion of a paper case scenario or engage with a standardized patient. Following the interaction, the students completed a survey related to their perceptions of the interventions along with open-ended questions intended to gain insight into application of clinical reasoning skills used during their respective intervention. Results: The …

Purpose: The purpose of this project is to explore perceptions of student physical therapists of a new, small-group presentation model called Presentation-Station-Rotation (PSR). Our hypothesis is that the PSR format will be a more effective, interactive, and stimulating mode of delivery than large group presentations. Method: Thirty-six first year student physical therapists were divided into groups of three students to give a presentation about their clinical experience. Presenters rotated to two other groups to present for three repetitions; listeners heard six different presentations. Thematic analysis was conducted on the questionnaire completed by the students regarding their experiences of the PSR …
Faculty Perceptions Of Health Professional Students’ Hybrid-Online Learning Strategies: A Multi-Center Qualitative Study, Evan M. Pucillo, Gabriela Perez, Leiselle Pilgrim
Faculty Perceptions Of Health Professional Students’ Hybrid-Online Learning Strategies: A Multi-Center Qualitative Study, Evan M. Pucillo, Gabriela Perez, Leiselle Pilgrim
Health Professions Education
Purpose. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the utilization of hybrid-online and fully-online instruction in health professional education. Physical (PT) and occupational therapy (OT) programs have become increasingly reliant upon this mode of instruction. Therefore, it is important to understand advising strategies for this educational environment. Faculty advisors may endorse specific learning strategies over others. However, advising strategies of faculty are not well represented in the scientific literature. Methods. A qualitative phenomenological design used a six-item, open-ended questionnaire to purposefully survey faculty members teaching and advising students in hybrid-online PT and OT graduate programs during COVID-19. Dedoose® v.9.4 qualitative software (Los Angeles, …

Student Perceptions Of Distance Learning Using Synchronous Videoconferencing In A Campus-Based Physical Therapist Education Program, Evan V. Papa, Derek Gerber, Deanna Dye, Joachim Agamba
Health Professions Education
Purpose: The embrace of technology-mediated learning environments for physical therapist education has perpetuated a natural shift toward blended online and hybrid learning environments. Yet understanding how students in graduate level physical therapy programs perceive distance learning remains unexamined. The purpose of this study was to examine students’ perspectives of a distance learning (DL) course delivered via synchronous videoconferencing within a traditional campus-based doctor of physical therapy (DPT) program. Method: A convenience sample of 150 first year DPT students was collected. All students were present on-campus in Pocatello, and Meridian, Idaho. The instructor was located on-campus in Meridian. Student perceptions were …
