The Role Of Ot In Treating Ecmo Patients In The Icu: A Scoping Review, Sophia C. Roe, Angela Blackwell, Whitney Hohman

Spring 2024 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium

This scoping review investigated the role of occupational therapists in treating extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) patients within the intensive care unit (ICU) setting. The review was conducted based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines. Databases analyzed included CINAHL, PubMed, and ProQuest. The primary research question aimed to identify the role of occupational therapists in ECMO patient care. The secondary research question aimed to determine the percentage of ECMO patients who received occupational therapy services in the ICU and were discharged home. The search retrieved a total of 400 records. After …

What Is Task-Oriented Training? A Scoping Review, Erin Halford, Samantha Jakubiszak, Kassidy Krug, Amanda Umphress Jan 2024

What Is Task-Oriented Training? A Scoping Review, Erin Halford, Samantha Jakubiszak, Kassidy Krug, Amanda Umphress

Student Journal of Occupational Therapy

Task-Oriented Training (TOT) is an proven stroke rehabilitation intervention with significant evidence-based research that supports its effectiveness. The absence of a clear definition has led to variability in research reporting and subsequent confusion with practical implementation. A consistent definition seeks to remedy this ambiguity to facilitate knowledge translation. The objective of this study was to determine a comprehensive definition of TOT that encapsulates previous definitions and descriptions in the literature. In order to derive this definition, a two stage scoping review process was conducted across four databases searching for articles on the use of TOT in adult stroke rehabilitation therapy. …

Reducing Stroke Readmission Through The Implementation Of Telehealth, Leilani Hermosura Apr 2021

Reducing Stroke Readmission Through The Implementation Of Telehealth, Leilani Hermosura

Student Scholarly Projects

Practice Problem: Readmission occurs frequently among patients with stroke and because of this, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) have imposed programs to reduce 30-day readmissions among hospitals. The health care system must respond with transition of care, especially during the period of recent stroke to improve patient outcomes.

PICOT: The PICOT question that guided this project was among patients with a recent diagnosis of stroke (P), what is the effect of a telehealth appointment with a nurse practitioner (NP) for post discharge follow-up (I), compared to a standard face-to-face clinic appointment (C), on 30-day readmissions rates (O), …

The Effectiveness Of Lsvt-Big And Pwr! Programs On A Patient With Parkinson’S Disease: A Case Report, Naureen Imam, Jennifer Dannenbring Apr 2020

The Effectiveness Of Lsvt-Big And Pwr! Programs On A Patient With Parkinson’S Disease: A Case Report, Naureen Imam, Jennifer Dannenbring

San Marcos, Spring 2020

Background: The prevalence of Parkinson’s Disease (PD) drives the search for effective interventions. While LSVT-BIG and high-intensity training improve gait speed and balance deficits, only limited research exists on the impact of the Parkinson's Wellness Recovery (PWR!) program on PD symptoms. Thus, LSVT-BIG and PWR! should be explored in tandem as standardized treatment for patients with PD.

Purpose: The primary purpose of this case report is to determine the effects of LSVT-BIG and PWR! programs on gait impairments, balance deficits, and participation restrictions in a patient with PD.

Case Description: A 74-year old male with PD attended PT …

Muscle Activation Patterns During Movement Attempts In Children With Acquired Spinal Cord Injury: Neurophysiological Assessment Of Residual Motor Function Below The Level Of Lesion., Darryn A Atkinson, Laura Mendez, Natalie Goodrich, Sevda C Aslan, Beatrice Ugiliweneza, Andrea L Behrman Dec 2019

Muscle Activation Patterns During Movement Attempts In Children With Acquired Spinal Cord Injury: Neurophysiological Assessment Of Residual Motor Function Below The Level Of Lesion., Darryn A Atkinson, Laura Mendez, Natalie Goodrich, Sevda C Aslan, Beatrice Ugiliweneza, Andrea L Behrman

Physical Therapy Collection

Introduction: Characterization of residual neuromotor capacity after spinal cord injury (SCI) is challenging. The current gold standard for measurement of sensorimotor function after SCI, the International Society for Neurological Classification of Spinal Cord Injury (ISNCSCI) exam, seeks to determine isolated intentional muscle activation, however many individuals with SCI exhibit intentional movements and muscle activation patterns which are not confined to specific joint or muscle. Further, isolated muscle activation is a feature of the neuromuscular system that emerges during development, and thus may not be an appropriate measurement standard for children younger than 6.

Methods: We utilized neurophysiological assessment …

Effect Of Stable And Unstable Surfaces On The Serratus Anterior Muscle Activation In A Kinetic-Chain Exercise Among Healthy Adults, Navpreet Kaur, Kunal Bhanot, Germaine Ferreira

Physical Therapy Collection

PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The stabilizing action of the serratus anterior (SA) muscle is vital in maintaining proper scapulothoracic rhythm.1,2 Poor activation of SA muscle could lead to many shoulder dysfunctions.1,3 This warrants for exercises that are best to activate the SA muscle. Kinetic-chain recruitment during exercises has demonstrated increased SA activation due to the myofascial connections between various segments of the body.4–6 Variation of surfaces during an exercise has been shown to alter the muscle recruitment patterns.7–9 The primary purpose of this study was to determine if the unstable surface can influence SA muscle activity during the kinetic …
