Periarticular Dextrose Prolotherapy For Patients With Primary Knee Osteoarthritis: A Casereport And Literature Reviewarticle, Yen-Jou Ho, Yao-Jen Chen, Chi-Chung Ho, Sheng-Wei Zeng, Su-Ju Tsai, Long-Wei Dai

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a common disease that primarily afflicts older adults. The mainstream management of knee OA involves integrative practice, including patient education, weight reduction, exercise, pharmacological therapy, and non-pharmacological modalities. However, prolotherapy with hypertonic dextrose via either intra-articular or periarticular injection, or a combination of both techniques, has become a strong evidence-based treatment or adjuvant therapy that may be used in addition to conservative management. In the literature, two studies have compared the effects of intra-articular and periarticular prolotherapy for knee OA and reveal comparable effects. In addition, the periarticular approach has fewer side effects and post-injection pain. …

Using Objective Ultrasonographic Findings And Subjective Self-Reported Measures To Evaluate The Effectiveness Of A Novel Single Intra-Articular Injection Of Hyaluronic Acid For The Treatment Of Knee Osteoarthritis: A Preliminary Report, Shenghui Tuan, Ihsiu Liou, Minhui Li, Yunjeng Tsai, Yinhan Chen, Tinyun Liao, Chialing Hung, Hungya Huang, Shufen Sun Dec 2016

Using Objective Ultrasonographic Findings And Subjective Self-Reported Measures To Evaluate The Effectiveness Of A Novel Single Intra-Articular Injection Of Hyaluronic Acid For The Treatment Of Knee Osteoarthritis: A Preliminary Report, Shenghui Tuan, Ihsiu Liou, Minhui Li, Yunjeng Tsai, Yinhan Chen, Tinyun Liao, Chialing Hung, Hungya Huang, Shufen Sun

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Purpose: Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common musculoskeletal disease worldwide. Knee OA is the most common type of OA and is the main cause of disability in elderly people. Intra-articular (IA) injection of hyaluronic acid (HA) has been widely proven to improve pain, physical function, and quality of life among patients with knee OA. However, most of the previous studies have used low-to-moderate molecular weight (MW) HA and have evaluated the clinical benefits by using subjective self-reported measures. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of a single IA injection of a novel cross-linked HA (HYAJOINT Plus) through objective ultrasonographic …

The Effect Of Health Promotion With Physical Therapy And Intra-Articular Hyaluronic Acid For Knee Osteoarthritis, Chen-Liang Chou, Wen-Hsu Sung, Fu-Wei Liu, Hsuci-Chen Lee, Li-Lung Haung, Jin-Jong Chen Dec 2013

The Effect Of Health Promotion With Physical Therapy And Intra-Articular Hyaluronic Acid For Knee Osteoarthritis, Chen-Liang Chou, Wen-Hsu Sung, Fu-Wei Liu, Hsuci-Chen Lee, Li-Lung Haung, Jin-Jong Chen

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Purpose: Knee osteoarthritis (knee OA) is a common chronic disease that affects elderly. Intra-articular injection of hyaluronic acid (IAHA) and physical therapy for knee OA have been shown to have clinical benefits in randomized, clinical trials separately. However, it is generally accepted that optimal management of knee OA requires a combination of pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatment. Currently, few studies have directly evaluated the benefits of combining the 2 treatments for knee OA. The purpose of this study explored the efficacy of interventions in patients with knee osteoarthritis through combined IAHA and physical therapy. This study investigated the potential benefit of …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Osteoarthritis of the knee joints is one of the most disabling diseases among the elderly because it causes limitations affecting many daily activities, and this results a large economic burden on public health. According to the date from the Bureau of National Health Insurance in 2000, the total expenditure of money on total knee replacements due to osteoarthritis reached 2.63 billion dollars, which was the second place in all inpatient medical expenses. The natural course of osteoarthritis of the knee joints is a gradual degeneration. As a result, treatments are aimed at pain alleviation, improving the joint's range of motion and …

Effects Of A Lateral Wedged Insole In Patients With Medial Compartment Osteoarthritis Of The Knee, Li-Wei Chou, Mu-Jung Kao, Pey-Yu Yang, Nai-Hsin Meng, Sui-Foon Lo, Hong-Wen Wu, Horng-Chaung Hsu Dec 2007

Effects Of A Lateral Wedged Insole In Patients With Medial Compartment Osteoarthritis Of The Knee, Li-Wei Chou, Mu-Jung Kao, Pey-Yu Yang, Nai-Hsin Meng, Sui-Foon Lo, Hong-Wen Wu, Horng-Chaung Hsu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Background: Medial compartment osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee is one of the most prevalent and disabling chronic conditions affecting older adults. This study assesses the efficacy of an inserted lateral wedged insole for the conservative treatment of medial compartment knee OA.Methods: Thirteen outpatients (9 females and 4 males with a mean age of 71.0 and a standard deviation of 5.5) with medial compartment knee OA were prospectively treated with an inserted lateral wedged insole with an elevation of 12 mm for three months. The baseline and three-month visual analog scale (VAS) scores for subjective knee pain and the remission score …

A Comparison Between The Patellofemoral Function Scale And The Lequesne Index In Patients With Knee Osteoarthritis, Wei-Jang Yen, Tzy-Fang Chu, Ta-Shen Kuan, Mao-Huan Hung, Chang-Zern Hong Dec 2004

A Comparison Between The Patellofemoral Function Scale And The Lequesne Index In Patients With Knee Osteoarthritis, Wei-Jang Yen, Tzy-Fang Chu, Ta-Shen Kuan, Mao-Huan Hung, Chang-Zern Hong

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Numerous therapeutic approaches are currently used to treat knee osteoarthritis. The relative efficacy of these approaches to the treatment of individual knees with osteoarthritis is not well understood. The main reason is that therapeutic outcome studies in osteoarthritis had been impeded by the lack of an objective, reproducible method for grading osteoarthritis of individual knee in order to compare the severity of the osteoarthritis between the two different sides. The Lequesne index has been used in most therapeutic trials on osteoarthritis of weight bearing joints. However, the ability of the Lequesne index to assess the status of individual knees with …
