Problem: In a western US Veterans Administration (VA) hospital system, patient education materials are provider-specific, not standardized, and not located in a central, readily available location.

Context: How does a patient education tool affect the clinicians' delivery of health education in increasing health literacy compared to written information alone in the US veteran population? An integrated literature review was performed using Cochrane, Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI), Scopus, CINAHL, and PubMed databases to address the PICOT question above and determine the impact of patient education tools on health literacy and patient engagement. Purpose: The object of this Quality Improvement (QI) project was to appraise the effectiveness of a web-based education resource for APN’s knowledge of HCV recommendations.

Methods: An educational intervention was conducted for APNs working in primary care medicine to increase provider knowledge of screening, diagnosing and management of viral Hepatitis C which utilized a web-based provider-specific curricula. A pre-test and post-test survey was used to assess the APN’s Knowledge, Attitude and Practices (KAP) regarding the current published evidence. Continuing education credits and small financial incentives were offered for participation. The curriculum was evaluated by an Infectious Disease expert APN.

Ten percent of the National Health Service annual budget goes to treat complications from diabetes (Lancet, 2010). The American Diabetes Association® (ADA, 2013) estimated that diabetics in the United States incur $176 billion annually in direct medical costs for treatment with hospitalization being the main component of the expenditures. California has the largest population of diabetics and the highest annual cost at $27.6 billion (ADA, 2013). The Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP, 2008) found that the average cost of hospitalization in 2008 for a patient with diabetes was $10,937 in contrast to $8,746 for a patient without diabetes.
