From Vapor To Vice: Unraveling The Links Between Vaping And Traditional Substance Abuse Among Youth, Ayana Powell

ABSTRACT:

Objective: To evaluate whether vaping or using e-cigarettes is associated with the use of traditional substances, such as cigarettes, alcohol, and marijuana.

Methods: Using data from the Monitoring the Future surveys, a multivariable logistic regression model was performed, and prevalent odds ratio were calculated to evaluate the association between vaping and traditional substances.

Results: Vaping use among U.S. adolescents and teenagers was found to be an associated with use of traditional substances (cigarette use [OR]= 6.36 [CI]= 4.84, 8.38; alcohol use [OR]=5.80 [CI]= 5.28, 6.38; and marijuana use [OR]= 7.77 [CI]= 6.95, 8.70).

Mental health is vital to the well-being of all individuals, especially children. COVID-19 unveiled a significant public health issue with poor mental health during the pandemic. There is limited literature about the mental health implications of COVID-19 policies for children and adolescents and preventive strategies for future pandemics. This descriptive epidemiology project provides an overview of the number, characteristics, and proximity of retailers that sell tobacco and vaping products to middle and high schools. ArcGIS was used to map the proximity of these retailers to public and private middle and high schools in Lincoln, Nebraska. Mapping the retailers and schools allowed us to explore the potential exposures to these products teens experience on a daily basis.

Pilot Evaluation Of Oneworld's Education Sessions On Sexually Transmitted Infections For Adolescents And Young Adults In The South Omaha Community, Mariela Bahena

Background. Rates for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in Douglas County, specifically gonorrhea and chlamydia, are among the highest in the nation. Adolescents and young adults between the ages of 15 and 24 are one of the most at-risk groups for acquiring either STI. Though not fatal itself, gonorrhea and chlamydia can lead to serious complications and physical discomfort in both males and females. Evidence-based and age-appropriate sexual health education has been proven to reduce the risk of STIs. Studies have shown that comprehensive education programs with a focus beyond abstinence are effective in promoting safe sex practices.
