Occurrence Of Kanamycin-Resistant Bacteria Relative To Anthropogenic Pollution Along Richland Creek In Nashville, Tn, Jolene Ho Mach, Annie Le, Brandon Torres Ramirez
Science University Research Symposium (SURS)
The overuse of antibiotics has caused an increase in antibiotic-resistant (AR) bacteria, which is a serious public health concern. Previous studies showed a significant correlation between anthropogenic pollution and AR bacteria. This project aims to identify AR bacteria in Richland Creek relative to local anthropogenic pollution. Water samples were collected at four locations along Richland Creek in Nashville, Tennessee. Bacteria resistant to the antibiotic kanamycin were isolated from the water samples, identified to genera using DNA barcoding, and compared among the sites. We expect to see a greater abundance and diversity of kanamycin-resistant bacteria closer to the end than near …

Objective: To describe the microbiological profile of microorganisms isolated from patients in critical care units of a hospital in the Lambayeque region in 2019-2020. Materials and methods: Descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach. A census study was carried out on 332 patients from critical care units with a positive microbiological culture registered in the file of the microbiology laboratory of the Lambayeque Regional Hospital in 2019-2020. The statistical software Info stat v8 was used for statistical analysis. Results: The median age was 50 years, predominantly male (55.1%). The most frequent culture sample was bronchial secretion (35.8%). The most …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
Allergic airway diseases such as asthma continue to increase in incidence in industrialized nations like the United States. These diseases are complex inflammatory processes involving numerous cells and mediators and are strongly influenced by fungal exposures. Recent developments in fungal detection methods have highlighted the contribution of Basidiomycota yeast species in indoor environments such as Vishniacozyma (syn. Cryptococcus) victoriae. However, despite the high levels of this yeast detected in indoor environments, very little is known about it or its role in respiratory morbidity. V. victoriae is phylogenetically similar to pathogenic Cryptococcus neoformans but lacks a capsule and is …
