Analyzing The Health Care Cost Curve: A Case Study., Robert D. Lieberthal

This case study uses data from a self-insured employer plan to perform an analysis into the properties of the health care cost curve. The analysis shows that one statistical property of the health care cost curve is that costs rise continuously, not on an annual or monthly basis. Graphical analysis indicates that managed care techniques used to restrain costs can also smooth utilization, producing the continuously growing cost curve observed. The analysis further illustrates that there is no one "cost curve"-analysis must be segmented by population. Finally, the power of predictive models to fit the cost curve varies by population. …

Patients with limited English proficiency have poorer healthcare outcomes. An assessment of the cultural and linguistic competency of Christiana Care Health Systems revealed that our language services were not sufficiently robust and this was affecting care. Therefore, the purpose of this quality improvement study was to improve healthcare outcomes, specifically the rate of primary cesarean delivery, through improved language assistance, to patients with limited English proficiency presenting to labor and delivery. The purpose of this study was to determine what effect achieving the Sphere Standards relating to water and sanitation had on the incidence of communicable diseases in a returnee camp in South Sudan during a complex humanitarian emergency. The water and sanitation infrastructure of the returnee camp was tracked over time until it met the Sphere Standards. The total camp population was also tracked over the same period of time and compared to daily counts of diseases diagnosed in a medical clinic at the camp. Associations between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and adult health outcomes are well grounded in the empirical literature; such studies generally find both direct and indirect effects of ACE on health outcomes such as liver disease, cancer, and heart disease. In this study, the association between ACEs and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) was examined, and smoking was assessed as a partial mediator in the ACE-COPD relationship. Data were collected from five states in which an eight category ACE module was included in the 2011 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). Jaime Caro is Senior Vice President, Research, at a consulting firm, where he leads development and application of novel techniques in health economics, multi-criteria decision analysis, benefit-risk analysis, comparative effectiveness, and epidemiology. He led the Caro Research Institute for more than a decade, until CRI was acquired in 2007. Dr. Caro trained at McGill University, where he practiced internal medicine and continues as adjunct Professor of Medicine, as well as of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. The purpose of this pilot study was to determine the potential impact of a standardized HIV education program delivered during a provider visit on patient self-management of HIV as measured by adherence to care. Following a baseline assessment of HIV knowledge and adherence using validated tools, eligible patients were randomized to receive the standard of care normally provided in clinic, or the standard of care and a10-minute scripted educational presentation delivered during the clinic visit. This study aims to identify themes in food preferences, knowledge, attitudes and behaviors (KAB) among a mix of rural and urban Ghanaians in the greater Kumasi region; to inform health interventions targeting better patient management of type II diabetes in a rapidly urbanizing region of Ghana; and to inform social marketing strategies by providing insight into consumption patterns. Treating geriatric cancer patients is a challenge because they present with comorbidities, poly-pharmacy, physical frailty, and/or cognitive impairment. More than a third of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in America is primarily due to modifiable risk factors. This reflects the significant impact that patient behavior could have on health outcomes. Our solution is to develop a tool that would convert Framingham Risk Score (FRS) – the gold standard of cardiac risk assessment – into a personalized mode that best incorporates patient’s desires and abilities, and that ultimately elicits behavior change. The first phase in this project was to understand how physicians are currently assessing cardiac risk.
