My primary public health interest is the reemerging arboviral infections (e.g., dengue) that are increasing in incidence, expanding into new geographic areas, affecting new populations, and are threatening to increase in the near future, especially following a natural disaster (e.g., hurricanes). The goal of the dengue lecture series is to promote the recognition of dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fever and improve the understanding of factors involved in prevention, surveillance and control of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the principal mosquito vector of dengue virus. The federal Mental Health Parity Act of 1996 requires insurers to offer the same benefits for mental disorders and substance abuse as they would for physical disorders, including any annual or lifetime limitations and restrictions placed upon such coverage. To date, twenty states across the nation have enacted parity laws for mental health and/or substance abuse benefits. This report summarizes the essential issues facing the state of Florida in the development of state mental health parity legislation, including an examination of the experiences of other states, a look at potential benefits, and a discussion of the impact of managed care …

Chronic diseases have been the main cause of mortality in the Brazilian metropolitan areas since 1960. Circulatory diseases are the main causes of chronic diseases. The aim was to compare the heart disease related premature deaths in Brazil with other countries in 1984-87. Methods: We studied the deaths from the official mortality statistics from eight metropolitan areas with good assurance of information: Belém, Recife, Salvador, Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Curitiba, Porto Alegre. Death causes analyzed were coronary heart disease (410-414); and heart diseases [ischemic heart disease (410-414) plus heart failure (428) plus, hypertension (401-404)]. The population was …

To study the most prescribed anti-hypertensive drugs, evaluating their agreement with established guidelines and drug cost. Methods - One hundred and forty one (101 women, mean age = 53.3 years) hypertensive patients who searched spontaneous attention were interviewed in a tertiary-care hospital. The inclusion criteria were previous diagnosis of hypertension and non cardiovascular complaints. Results - The majority of the 107 (75.9%) patients were on medical treatment.
