Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a highly prevalent, chronic condition with symptoms that include inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. ADHD affects six million children in the United States (Tran et al., 2021). The purpose of this evidence-based practice project was to implement a holistic office protocol that addressed the chronicity and future health outcomes of children and adolescents, ages 2-17 years with ADHD through stimulant or non-stimulant medication prescriptions, behavioral therapy referrals, and education surrounding diet, and exercise. Psychiatric disorders are very common in the general pediatric population. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common psychiatric diagnosis in childhood but can mimic and be found comorbidity with other psychiatric disorders. It is necessary for primary care providers to perform a thorough initial workup for ADHD and possible comorbidity psychiatric disorders to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment of pediatric patients.

Stimulant drugs are a cornerstone in the treatment of Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and are being prescribed at increasing rates. The safe prescription and use of these drugs by providers and patients alike is critically important to appropriately treating ADHD and preventing misuse. This presentation discusses how patients can be educated on the uses of stimulants and provides information on what to do in case of overdose. Additionally, resources for providers are provided to continue improving awareness of at-risk patients and community resources available to them.

This article outlines common neurobiological, developmental, psychological, and other medical diagnoses and conditions that symptomatically mimic attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in the pediatric population. Many of these disorders are comorbid with ADHD, but they may also be misdiagnosed as ADHD. Due to the similarity in presentation, these conditions must be included when formulating a differential diagnosis. Accurately diagnosing a child with ADHD requires a thorough evaluation and work up to rule out diagnoses on the differential.
