Introduction

Public health physicians occupy a unique place in the fields of both medicine and public health. Trained in each field, and often holding positions of authority in public health systems, public health physicians are sometimes challenged to identify their roles in either field of practice. Public health physicians work to achieve population health, but there has been limited theoretical development in this field of practice.

Objectives

The objective of this research was to develop an empirical theory of practice for public health physicians.

Chronic musculoskeletal pain results in significant personal, economic, and social burden. Early identification and intervention in those people with acute pain that are likely to transition into a state of chronicity can prevent the onset of chronic pain before it emerges and becomes resistant to treatment. This study investigated the potential stress biomarkers associated with acute pain and disability and how those associations are influenced by early life adversities.

The purposes of this survey-based, mixed-methods study were to investigate medical students’ perceptions of: (1) the overall level of medical school training acquired in relation to childhood obesity treatment; (2) the medical school training acquired in relation to specific competencies associated with the treatment of children with obesity and their caregiver(s); and (3) additional training needed. Results showed that of the 507 students who provided complete data, approximately 60% (n = 303) disagreed or strongly disagreed that their medical training related to childhood obesity was adequate. The objective of the thesis was to describe the factors leading to falls in distal radius fracture (DRF) events, explore patient perceived risk of falls, and postural stability. A mixed method study described the type of fall in DRF patients (n= 1454) and patient perceived contributing factors (n=29). A prospective cohort study examined the postural stability and related fall risk of DRF participants (n=137) in Biodex Balance System (BBS) and compared to normative values. Background: With an aging population and an increasing prevalence of therapy for atherosclerosis, it might be expected that stroke subtypes would be changing over time. Limited information exists on the ischemic stroke subtypes in adults in Canada.

Methods: Patients referred to the Urgent TIA Clinic, in London, Ontario, between 2002-2012 were included. Secular trends were analyzed using Poisson regression with spline trend function. Ischemic stroke subtype classification was validated.

Results: 3,445 consecutive patients (mean age + SD 64.8 + 14.9) were included. Cardioembolic strokes/TIAs increased from 21% in 2002 to 56% in 2012, whereas all other ischemic stroke subtypes …
