Introduction:

Studies have already investigated the practice of physical therapists (PTs) in promoting non-treatment physical activity (NTPA). However, these were done in the context of mostly western settings or were not specific to older adult practice. It is still unclear if a similar level of practice and perspectives on NTPA promotion exists in a setting where physical therapy is more associated with rehabilitation than health promotion, such as in the Philippines. Therefore, this study aimed to describe Filipino PTs' knowledge of WHO physical activity (PA) guidelines and their use of behavioral change techniques (BCTs) and theories when promoting PA in …

Background: Aging causes impairment in balance and increases the prevalence of falls in older adults. Martial arts are now incorporated into exercise programs to improve balance. Arnis, a Filipino Martial Art, can improve the balance control of older adults.

Objectives: This study primarily aims to determine the effects of an Arnis-based exercise program on balance control of healthy community-dwelling older adults. This study also aims to describe its effect on older adults’ concerns about falling and lower limb functional strength.

Methods:This will be a single-blind, pilot randomized controlled trial. Participants will be randomly allocated to either the intervention or …

Physical Therapy Research Symposium

Background

Understanding the long-term impacts of COVID-19-related stay-at-home orders on physical activity can help clinicians prepare for consequences that may impact their patient populations.

Purpose

This study examined effects of the 2020 COVID-19 stay-at-home orders on physical activity levels in community-dwelling older adults including the number of hours they spent walking outside of the home and working/volunteering in the community.

Methods

Eighty-nine participants completed a monthly Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE) for 10 months. One-way repeated measures ANOVAs with post hoc analyses were calculated to determine differences among PASE scores, PASE item 2 scores, and work/volunteer hours at …

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews

Purpose: Physical performance measures, like walking speed, identify and predict preclinical mobility disability but are rarely used in routine medical care. A preventive model of care called Mobility Checkup is being designed to reduce mobility disability in older adults. This study had two purposes: 1) determine feasibility and outcomes of the Mobility Checkup, and 2) identify preferences of older adults regarding this model of care using a discrete choice experiment.

Methods: Adults over 55 years of age were recruited from the community. In the study’s first phase, participants completed a Mobility Checkup, with feasibility evaluated using 6 criteria. In the …
