Data Modeling Of Cognitive Structure In Physiotherapy Students Learning Gross Anatomy, William Allan Besselink Jan 2021

Data Modeling Of Cognitive Structure In Physiotherapy Students Learning Gross Anatomy, William Allan Besselink

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Cognitive structures that promote deep learning of gross anatomy are integral to musculoskeletal physiotherapy practice yet poorly understood. This quantitative, criterion-related validation study addressed two data modeling strategies (multidimensional scaling and Pathfinder networks) as a potential visual and quantitative representation of the cognitive structures of physiotherapy students learning gross anatomy. The study was grounded in the Adaptive Control of Thought-Rational theory of cognition. The research questions addressed the agreement (reliability, accuracy, and association) between student and expert cognitive structures and included the derived quantitative parameters as predictor variables in multiple regression to examine potential relationships with unit grades. An online …

Exploring Family-Centered Care From The Perspectives Of Home-Health Physical Therapists, James Mathews Jan 2020

Exploring Family-Centered Care From The Perspectives Of Home-Health Physical Therapists, James Mathews

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Older adults may need, or desire, caregiver and family involvement to avoid hospitalizations and institutionalizations. The caregivers of these older adults have the highest rates of burnout, injury, and turnover. Family-centered care (FCC) involves collaboration between healthcare practitioners, patients, family members, and caregivers. FCC is both established and effective in pediatric care settings. There is a paucity of evidence on how FCC is applied to older adult populations. Home health physical therapists (HHPTs) work with older adults in their homes and train both family members on how to safely handle and manage the care-dependent older adult. The purpose of this …

Small Business Marketing Strategies For Physical Therapy Practice Owners, Matthew Lane Daugherty Jan 2018

Small Business Marketing Strategies For Physical Therapy Practice Owners, Matthew Lane Daugherty

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The United States economy depends on small businesses, which represent 99% of all businesses in the United States, yet approximately 50% of small businesses cease operations in the first 5 years. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore the marketing strategies used by owners of small businesses to develop and maintain their organization through the initial 5 years of business operation. The population included 5 physical therapy business owners in northeastern Florida who had sustained their business for a minimum of 5 years. The conceptual framework for this study was the brand equity model, and data were …

Return To Full Duty Work: Determining The Ideal Time To Refer Occupationally Isolated Acute Low Back Pain Patients To Physical Therapy, Aletha Mae Stephenson Jan 2016

Return To Full Duty Work: Determining The Ideal Time To Refer Occupationally Isolated Acute Low Back Pain Patients To Physical Therapy, Aletha Mae Stephenson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Employees who develop and report nontraumatic acute low back pain that occurs while performing work duties, or shortly thereafter, are classified as having occupational isolated acute low back pain (OIALBP). The purpose of this project was to identify and implement an evidence- based time frame to refer occupational isolated acute low back pain patients (OIALBPPs) to physical therapy (PT) that returns them to full duty work (FDW) more quickly. The diffusion of innovation theory aided the project leader and health care providers to develop strategies to overcome barriers in implementing the project's results into the practice. A total of 932 …

Self-Efficacy, Cultural Competence, And Perception Of Learning Environment In Traditional And Interprofessional Education Physical Therapy Curricula, Laura Smith Jan 2015

Self-Efficacy, Cultural Competence, And Perception Of Learning Environment In Traditional And Interprofessional Education Physical Therapy Curricula, Laura Smith

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Interprofessional education (IPE), a concept that brings students from different health care professions together in the learning process, has been adopted by some physical therapy (PT) schools as an alternative to traditional PT-only curricula. Both approaches have the goal of improving patient outcomes for an increasingly diverse population. There was a void in the research comparing IPE and traditional curricula in PT education. Grounded in the theoretical frameworks of adult and social learning theory, the purpose of this study was to examine differences in students' self-efficacy, cultural competence, and perceptions of the learning environment based on curricular type and prior …
