Psychometric Properties Of Segmental Assessment Of Trunk Control In Infants And Toddlers With Down Syndrome., Megan Flores, Katy Mitchell, Christina Bickley, Carolyn P. Da Silva

Physical Therapy Collection

Purpose: This study investigated infants and toddlers with Down syndrome (DS) to determine: reliability of the Segmental Assessment of Trunk Control (SATCo), concurrent validity of the SATCo with the Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM), and whether age and SATCo score predict GMFM score.

Methods: Eighteen infants and toddlers with DS were tested on the SATCo by 2 physical therapist (PT) raters. One PT rater administered the GMFM. After 2 weeks, PT raters rescored their recorded SATCo sessions. A third PT rater also scored the SATCo videos.

Results: Interrater reliability of the SATCo was moderate to good and …

Psychometric Properties Of Segmental Assessment Of Trunk Control In Infants And Toddlers With Down Syndrome, Megan Flores, Katy Mitchell, Carolyn Da Silva, Christina Bickley

Physical Therapy Collection

Purpose/Hypothesis: The purpose of this study was to investigate infants and toddlers with Down Syndrome (DS) to determine: 1) interrater, intrarater, and live versus video reliability of the Segmental Assessment of Trunk Control (SATCo), 2) concurrent validity of the SATCo with the Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM), and 3) whether a model of staggered entry with age and SATCo score predicts GMFM score.

Number of Subjects: 18 children with DS between 6 to 23 months (mean = 13.67, SD = 5.31) participated. Materials and Methods: The SATCo is a dichotomous scale to assess 7 discrete levels of trunk control in …

The Effect Of Aquatic Interventions In Combination With Early Start Physical Therapy Services On Gross Motor Development In A Male Child With Down Syndrome, Roxanne Mueller Dec 2019

The Effect Of Aquatic Interventions In Combination With Early Start Physical Therapy Services On Gross Motor Development In A Male Child With Down Syndrome, Roxanne Mueller

San Marcos, Fall 2019

Introduction: Aquatic therapy has been used in various patient populations as a modality to facilitate motor control and manage tonicity.1-3 Despite the variety of literature addressing individuals with Down syndrome (DS) and aquatic therapy, there has been little described about the effects of aquatic therapy on early gross motor development in children with DS.

Purpose: The purpose of this case study is to examine whether aquatic physical therapy interventions combined with early start physical therapy influence gross motor developmental delay in a child with DS.

Case Description: The patient is a 31-month-old boy with diagnosis of …

Feasibility And Preliminary Outcomes Of A Standardized Exercise Program In Adults With Down Syndrome: A Pilot Study, Megan Flores, Kristen Barta, Martha Sneary, Germaine Ferreira, Elizabeth Ardolino Feb 2018

Feasibility And Preliminary Outcomes Of A Standardized Exercise Program In Adults With Down Syndrome: A Pilot Study, Megan Flores, Kristen Barta, Martha Sneary, Germaine Ferreira, Elizabeth Ardolino

Purpose/ Hypothesis: Youth with Down Syndrome (DS) have limited participation in physical activity. When compared to their typically developing peers, adults with DS display decreased functional mobility and strength. Exercise has shown to improve the physical fitness, overall health, and quality of life in people with DS. The Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT® BIG) is an effective treatment approach designed for patients with Parkinson’s disease. The core components of LSVT® BIG include large amplitude movements, sensory calibration, high intensity, and maximum effort while performing the daily exercises. Due to hypotonicity associated with DS, these individuals typically display kyphotic posture, shortened …

The aim of this study was to assess gross motor abilities, classifying them in stages, of children with Down syndrome and children without developmental disorders, and to compare them with each other. Twelve children with Down syndrome, from two special schools and twelve children without development disorders, from a regular school of Caxias do Sul city, in Brazil, were evaluated.

Six gross motor abilities were assessed: balance in one foot, walking on straight line, running, jumping on one foot, throwing and catching, through the tables of Gallahue and Ozmun (2001).

The children with Down syndrome could not keep up with …
