Longitudinal Monitoring Of Gait Parameters For Lower Limb Prosthetic Users With Physical Therapy Using Video-Based Gait Analysis, Alisha Agarwal, Bs, Anthony Cimorelli, Cpo, R. James Cotton, Md, Phd

Alpha Omega Alpha Research Symposium Posters

Introduction

Gait training in physical therapy is a common standard of practice for new lower limb prosthetic users. Progress is typically assessed through functional outcome measures such as the 10-meter or 6-minute walk tests1. While these tests measure walking speed and endurance, they fall short of capturing gait quality or quantifying gait parameters which literature shows to be of therapeutic value 2,3. Routine access to quantitative gait assessment could provide clinicians with benchmarks to optimize treatment interventions. Traditional gait analysis systems require specialized equipment making them very resource-intensive and inconvenient to operate. Using human pose estimation techniques, we have developed …

Outcomes Of Formalized Physical Therapy Vs. Self-Directed Home Exercise, Thomas Lee, Daniel Bowles Jan 2020

Outcomes Of Formalized Physical Therapy Vs. Self-Directed Home Exercise, Thomas Lee, Daniel Bowles

Phase 1

Introduction: After a formal microdiscectomy or 1-2 level anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) there exists a lack of consensus on effectiveness of postoperative formal physical therapy (PT) rehabilitation efficacy. We seek to determine whether home PT is equivalent to standard PT using patient reported outcomes measures (PROMs) after the aforementioned operations.

Methods: This study is a prospective single center cohort study. The inclusion criteria is patients undergoing a microdiscectomy or ACDF operation excluding patients under 18, infection, trauma, tumor, or revision. Outcomes are measured using PROMs specific for each operation.

Results: Preliminary data suggests that post-operative …

Comparison Of Home Therapy Vs Formal Outpatient Physical Therapy In Post-Operative Management Of Two-Incision Distal Bicep Tendon Repair, Joseph Botros, John Horneff Iii, Md, Thomas Harper, Brent Page Jan 2020

Comparison Of Home Therapy Vs Formal Outpatient Physical Therapy In Post-Operative Management Of Two-Incision Distal Bicep Tendon Repair, Joseph Botros, John Horneff Iii, Md, Thomas Harper, Brent Page

Phase 1

Background: Distal bicep tendon tears are a relatively uncommon injury, affecting 1.2/ 100,000 persons per year; they can also cause substantial loss in supination and flexion strength. The most common treatment is a double incision distal bicep tendon repair, which involves surgical reinsertion of the bicep tendon onto the radial tuberosity. Following surgery, physicians have traditionally recommended the patient undergo 5-12 weeks of formal outpatient physical therapy. This can be a significant cost and time burden to the patient. Therefore, some physicians have instead opted for home physical therapy, in which the patient is given instructions on exercises to complete …

Optimizing Physical Therapy Sessions Among Patients Undergoing Elective Lumbar Surgery, Ellina Hattar, Md, Kelly Hufford, Dpt, Marie Wilson, Rn, James Harrop Jun 2018

Optimizing Physical Therapy Sessions Among Patients Undergoing Elective Lumbar Surgery, Ellina Hattar, Md, Kelly Hufford, Dpt, Marie Wilson, Rn, James Harrop

House Staff Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Conference (2016-2019)

Background

Physical therapy is imperative in achieving early mobilization, thereby reducing morbidity of immobility such as venous thrombolic events, improving postoperative pain, and facilitating appropriate disposition among patients who have recently undergone spine surgery. At TJUH, patients undergoing elective spine surgery are planned to engage in physical therapy (PT) twice a day. There are however several impediments that may limit the ability of patients to adequately participate in PT.

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Posters

This poster illustrates how knowledge of clinical anatomy, biomechanics, and orthopaedic manual therapy can be applied to the examination and treatment of a violinist.

The Appropriateness Of Long-Term Opioids To Treat Chronic Back Pain, Thomas Watanabe, Michael Salino, Adam Schreiber Apr 2012

The Appropriateness Of Long-Term Opioids To Treat Chronic Back Pain, Thomas Watanabe, Michael Salino, Adam Schreiber

Department of Rehabilitation Medicine Faculty Papers

Point/Counterpoint Case Scenario: A 55-year old man presents to a pain clinic upon referral from his primary care physician. His symptom is axial low back pain. His pain started approximately 1 year earlier without a specific inciting event. He denies radiation of pain into the lower extremities. There is no bowel or bladder involvement. There is no directional preference. He reports pain "all the time," with minimal specific exacerbating or relieving factors. There is no medical-legal involvement. His medical history is significant for hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, obesity, and sleep apnea. He is a divorced father of 2 adult children. He is …

Test-Retest Reliability Of Temporal And Spatial Gait Characteristics Measured With An Instrumented Walkway System (Gaitrite®), Cornelius J.T. Van Uden, Marcus P. Besser May 2004

Test-Retest Reliability Of Temporal And Spatial Gait Characteristics Measured With An Instrumented Walkway System (Gaitrite®), Cornelius J.T. Van Uden, Marcus P. Besser

Department of Physical Therapy Faculty Papers

Background
The purpose of this study was to determine the test-retest reliability of temporal and spatial gait measurements over a one-week period as measured using an instrumented walkway system (GAITRite®).

Methods
Subjects were tested on two occasions one week apart. Measurements were made at preferred and fast walking speeds using the GAITRite® system. Measurements tested included walking speed, step length, stride length, base of support, step time, stride time, swing time, stance time, single and double support times, and toe in-toe out angle.

Results
Twenty-one healthy subjects participated in this study. The group consisted of 12 men and 9 women, …
