Could Cultures Determine The Course Of Epidemics And Explain Waves Of Covid-19?, Md Salman Rahman Aug 2022

Could Cultures Determine The Course Of Epidemics And Explain Waves Of Covid-19?, Md Salman Rahman

Theses and Dissertations

Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19), caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, is an infectious disease that quickly became a pandemic spreading with different patterns in each country. Travel bans, lockdowns, social distancing, and non-essential business closures caused significant economic disruptions and stalled growth worldwide in the pandemic’s first year. In almost every country, public health officials forced and/or encouraged Nonpharmaceutical Interventions (NPIs) such as contact tracing, social distancing, masks, and quarantine. Human behavioral decision-making regarding social isolation significantly impedes global success in containing the pandemic. This thesis focuses on human behaviors and cultures related to the decision-making of social isolation during the pandemic. …

Transmission Rate In Partial Differential Equation In Epidemic Models, Alaa Elkadry Jan 2013

Transmission Rate In Partial Differential Equation In Epidemic Models, Alaa Elkadry

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The rate at which susceptible individuals become infected is called the transmission rate. It is important to know this rate in order to study the spread and the effect of an infectious disease in a population. This study aims at providing an understanding of estimating the transmission rate from mathematical models representing the population dynamics of an infectious diseases using two different methods. Throughout, it is assumed that the number of infected individuals is known. In the first chapter, it includes historical background for infectious diseases and epidemic models and some terminology needed to understand the problems. Specifically, the partial …

Characterization Of Β-Lactam Resistant Pandemic Serotypes Of Vibrio Cholerae Isolated From Ships' Ballast Tanks And Coastal Waters, Amanda Lynn Goodrich Oct 2006

Characterization Of Β-Lactam Resistant Pandemic Serotypes Of Vibrio Cholerae Isolated From Ships' Ballast Tanks And Coastal Waters, Amanda Lynn Goodrich

OES Theses and Dissertations

Vibrio cholerae serotypes 01 and 0139 are responsible for world-wide epidemics of cholera. These pandemic causing strains must possess genes that encode for the cholera toxin (CTX) and toxin co-regulated pili (TCP) in order to infect their hosts. In this study, 284 isolates of Vibrio cholerae from ballast and coastal waters were serotyped, with 11 % testing positive for serotype 01 and 21 % testing positive for serotype 0139. PCR assays were used to detect the presence of ctxA and tcpA genes in all positive isolates, none of which contained ctxA while 2% of the isolates contained tcpA. The 01 …
