Unplanned extubation (UE) is the removal of an endotracheal tube from a patient any time before their planned extubation. In layman’s terms it is when a patient loses their airway before they were ready. Pain is “an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage” (Treede, 2018). The phenomenon of pain is a personal and unique experience that many of the world’s population has experienced in some form or fashion throughout their lifetime.
